Andrews Academy's

Official Newsletter

April 29, 2022

Dear AA Families,

We are just weeks away from ending the 2021-22 school year. God has led us on the journey thus far, and we give Him all honor and praise.

We ended this week with MAP testing for 9th and 10th graders.

Next week is NHS Cause Week. Students and sponsors have been diligently planning for this event, and we pray for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Our greatest cause is to bring others to Christ, and we hope and pray that this program will aid in fulfilling this mission.

Anyone working with children in our school must complete a background check. To provide a safe learning environment for our students, it is required that anyone who will potentially volunteer in any activity in our school should complete a background check. Information to complete this process will be shared next week in our newsletter.

Please review the E-Sanjo for important information regarding these events:

  • Band & Bells Spring Concert

  • Orchestra & Vocal Spring Concert

  • Graduation

As we get closer to the end of the semester, we are reminding students about the Andrews Academy dress code policy. Uniforms should not be altered in any way. All clothing should be rip-free and clean without holes. Please review the Sourcebook regarding this.

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love.
But the greatest of these is love.

1 Corinthians 13:13

Faith, hope, and love are three of the most powerful forces in the entire universe. As Christians we live our lives with these guiding principles. We should strive to grow deeper in faith with Christ, have hope for a brighter future in all our endeavors, and develop a profound love for God and all whom we encounter.

Blessings,

Pastor Mario Ferguson

Backpacking Tour

On April 21, 24 students and 9 chaperones set out on an adventure to conquer some of the Smoky Mountain trails, and challenge themselves physically, emotionally, and spiritually, as well to spend some time enjoying God’s creation. They returned on Wednesday, April 27.

The journey was tough with heat as well as cold extremes, but through this experience, they built friendships, teamwork, and most importantly, were able to see God in amazing new ways. Since they were away from cell towers, we were not able to receive photos until today. Here are a few. We will have many photos and a full report in the next issue of the E-Sanjo and on Facebook soon.

New England Education Tour

This year's educational tour was to New England (April 24-29, 2022). One can read and see the pictures in textbooks of the historic events of American history; however, to quote a former principal of AA, “No better way to school than to stand at the exact spot of the battle of Lexington & Concord.”

  • Monday, April 25: Reported in a previous E-Sanjo

  • Tuesday, April 26: In the morning, the students were able to appreciate the way things were back in the old days at Plymouth Colony, a reproduction a 17th-Century English Village. They also visited Historic Patuxit, where the Wampanoag Homesite is the only living history exhibit in the world where guests see, touch, and experience Wampanoag history from the Native perspective. Then they toured the Mayflower II, a replica built in homage to the original Mayflower, the ship that bought the Pilgrims from England to America. The Mayflower II is now permanently docked just a few hundred yards from Plymouth Rock. In the afternoon, they visited Breakers Mansion in Newport, Rhode Island. This is the Vanderbilt's summer “cottage."

  • Wednesday, April 27: The group's activities included the Mystic Seaport, which is known for its collection of sailing ships and the re-creation of the crafts and fabric of an entire 19th-century seafaring village. The afternoon included going to Old Sturbridge Village, which is commonly referred to as the United States' oldest and largest living history museums, reliving the history from 1790 - 1840.

  • Thursday, April 28: Students enjoyed the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame that has over 40,000 square feet of basketball history, and the Norman Rockwell Museum, which is dedicated to the work of one of the most famous painters and illustrators in the USA. Rockwell is most famous for the cover illustrations of everyday life that he created for the Saturday Evening Post magazine for nearly five decades. Then they drove to Niagara Falls, New York, and enjoyed the night view.

  • Friday, April 29: Students viewed the falls in daylight hours and drove back to beautiful Berrien Springs.

Looking at the itinerary that students and parents were given, it is amazing that Mr. Sherman, history teacher at AA, could fit in so many sites in such a short time. Thank you, Mr. Sherman, and the other sponsors of the trip for your leadership. And thank you students for having such a positive attitude and interest in all the sites seen.

Rotary Essay Winner

Congratulations to Bryndis Davis in receiving second place in the Rotary Essay contest! This past Monday, she was honored for writing an excellent essay. She read it at a luncheon and received this $750 check.

Seniors, please continue to submit essays and apply for the various scholarships that Andrews Academy has been informing you about with information of these opportunities. Various organizations in our community are providing money for you, so please apply and submit your essays.

For 35 years, the St. Joseph-Benton Harbor Rotary Club has sponsored an Essay Contest. They partner with Berrien RESA and open the contest up to one senior from each high school in Berrien County and one home schooled senior. Each school nominates a senior to represent their community in the contest. This contest offers an opportunity for students to demonstrate their social studies and English arts skills. Students are asked to compose a compelling essay about a current social topic in a timed setting. The topic is derived from current high school social studies content expectations and is shared with the contestants in December of each year. Scholarships are awarded to the top three essay writers. Winners are identified by early April of each year, and scholarships are formally presented to winning students at a luncheon in April of each year.

The Journal Era Newspaper Article

There is an article about the new SA officers in the local newspaper, The Journal Era. It is now in local newsstands and will be available until Tuesday. It is found in the April 27 issue on page 11.

New SA officers, you may want to purchase a souvenir copy.

MAP Testing

This morning (April 29) freshmen and sophomores did their MAP® Growth™ test from NWEA® on a computer or tablet. MAP Growth scores help teachers check student performance by measuring achievement and growth. Teachers use results to tailor classroom lessons and set goals for students. This test adapts to the student’s responses to measure the student’s skill level. These results will provide a more complete picture of what the student knows and is ready to learn—whether it is on, above, or below their grade level. Teachers can identify students with similar scores that are generally ready for instruction in similar skills and topics, and then plan instruction accordingly.

AA's Class of 2034 Visits Andrews Academy

Ruth Murdoch Elementary School’s kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Curnutt, led her students over to AA’s biology classroom to learn more about birds. They’ve been studying birds, and one of their last activities of the unit was to see the various bird specimens at AA, and most importantly, to take turns enjoying the baby chickens. Mrs. Curnutt has been bringing her class over to the Academy for the last 23 years. Former kindergarten students of hers, now Academy students, greeted her with high fives and hugs as she reminded them that they came over to AA when they were in her kindergarten class to do this same field trip.

AU Junior Cardinals Basketball

The AU Junior Cardinals basketball team is delighted to share a glimpse of the outreach and sportsmanship taking place in their basketball program. The following is an email received by the Junior Cardinals' Athletic Director, Coach Scott Schalk, from an opposing team.

Scott,

Just wanted to let you know about our JH boys game. Your JH boys coach showed the true spirit of sportsmanship last night. Near the end of the game, we had Nathan in. Nathan has Down Syndrome. Your coach encouraged his players to throw Nathan the ball. Nathan then shot and made it! I can’t tell you how many teams have just blown by that young man. After the shot, your boys cheered and gave Nathan high fives.

It made our night. We have always appreciated Andrews' display of  Christ-like attitudes, and last night was another example of it.

Dana

The team's desire is to continue demonstrating the character of Christ through basketball. The Junior Cardinals will host a summer program for anyone interested in improving skills and scrimaging. Johnson Gym will be open four days a week at the times below times. Coaches will be present.

Chapels this Week

On Wednesday, Mrs. Pellegrini recapped what she had presented earlier this week. Monday, she told us that God will always get us out of difficult situations. Tuesday, she reminded us to share God's goodness. This day she talked about thanking God for His goodness. Mrs. Pellegrini's father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2012. He was a perfectly healthy vegetarian, didn't smoke, etc., so Mrs. Pellegrini wondered why this happened. Her dad lived for six months before passing, but Mrs. Pellegrini realized the small blessings throughout this journey. During his hospice care, her dad shared Adventist literature with his caretakers. Mrs. Pellegrini said, "If my dad had to lose his life for others to gain eternal life, that's okay." In closing, each student wrote something they were thankful to God for on a rock. The rocks were placed outside, so the students could see them every day and be reminded of God's faithfulness.

A new speaker, Nathaniel White, AA freshman, presented for chapel on Thursday. First, he called up a few volunteers. The first put on noise-canceling headphones and tried to follow Nathaniel's instructions. The second was blindfolded and asked to describe an object they could not see. The third was asked to grab something while having their hands tied up. None of these volunteers completed their tasks because they were impaired. These examples are like the body of Christ, the church. Each part of the body is different, and that is good. If everyone were the same, the body wouldn't function properly. God made everyone unique and with a special gift. If you're running from His calling in your life, stop and realize how special you are. In closing, Nathaniel asked us one question: "Are you going to be who God made you to be?”
