Beach Church & Baptisms

This past Sabbath morning was Beach Church and baptisms (May 14, 2022). The church program began with singing by the shores of Lake Michigan at Jean Klock Park beach in Benton Harbor. Following church, the students gathered by the shores of Lake Michigan for the baptism of Luke and Jasmine Patterson by Pastor Mario Ferguson.

The new Student association officers for the 2022-2023 school year led in the programs this past Sabbath. They worked “twice as hard” for this particular service because of unsettled weather, at first moving it to the Academy because of the predicted thunderstorms, and then rescheduling church at the beach because the weather cleared. They returned to the commons for lunch as some unsettled weather was still predicted for the afternoon.

We pray for the continued blessing on the two individuals who made this public decision to follow Jesus and also pray for those in the process of deciding. We also pray for the Holy Spirit’s leading on each student's and faculty's lives.

Honors Project Presentations

Andrews Academy seniors have an opportunity to graduate with honors. This is a program to challenge students to go beyond what is traditionally done, to take a series of challenging classes, and to work on a research project. After completing the research and writing a research paper, participants then present their findings as the final stage of the honors project during an assembly. Last Friday, there were thirteen presenters. Each presenter shared their research to 20-30 students. It was impressive to see the quality of research and presentations that were made. Congratulations to each presenter for a job well done!

One of the other goals in having seniors present to the students is so that each student can become aware of the honors program here at AA. We hope students will become inspired to accept this challenge and begin an honors project.

Community Service Day

This Friday, May 20, 8:30 AM - 12:00 PM (half day - no lunch, snacks provided)

A reminder that our AA Community Service Day is scheduled for this Friday, May 20. As part of Andrews Academy's educational program, we participate in service to others.

As a school we feel that it is important for students to learn to serve our community. We devote a day to practicing this concept with the students, as well as having various smaller projects throughout the year.

Please plan to arrive for devotions at 8:30 AM. Activities for the day include yard work, picking up trash, cleaning windows, etc. A reminder to wear closed toe shoes and long pants (no shorts!) for protection as you work. Please bring work gloves. You do not need to wear your AA uniform; however, if you have an AA t-shirt, please represent our school. Our dismissal time will be by 12:00 noon.

Junior Class Vespers & Treasure Hunt

“Lessons from Nature”

We invite each junior to our last class vespers of the school year. Come enjoy a hot dog supper by the campfire followed by a treasure hunt through the forest. Some treasures will be chocolate treats (to finish our supper), and other treasures will be scriptural nature nuggets with bonus points. We will then return to the campfire for worship where we will learn lessons from nature through the scriptures found on the trail. We will also have time to express thanks to each other and give praises to our God, all  interspersed with singing by the campfire.

If you are driving to the vespers, please drive in the driveway and park in the same direction. If you are being dropped off for the event, please do not drive in the driveway, walk in from the road. Please bring lawn chairs and a roasting stick.

Location: See permission slip for details.

Date: This Friday, May 20 (Sabbath, May 21, rain date)

Time: 6:30-9:00 PM

Tuition

Tuition payment #10 is due on or before next Wednesday, May 25.

Final Exam/Assessment Schedule

& Graduation Practice

Final exams start next Tuesday, May 24. Please note when your exams are scheduled for and carefully prepare for them so that you can do well in each of your classes. The first day begins at 9:00 AM to provide you more time to prepare. If your transportation requires you to arrive at the school at 8:00 AM, then please go to the Commons.

If you have a study hall (or band) during the first exam slot of the day, then you do not need to arrive until devotions (or your first final of the day, whichever comes first). Please see Mrs. Meekma in the office to excuse your class or if you have any questions. Be sure to sign in at the front office if you arrive after the first exam time.

If you have a break in between two finals (for example, on Wednesday you have a 10:15 AM class final and no 11:10 AM class final [such as a study hall or CSA], then you must go to study hall. You may not leave campus and walk over to Apple Valley or anywhere else.

Please remember that students must stay in the classroom for the entire exam class period. You may not go "get books," "get a drink," etc. when you are done with your exam.

Before the exam begins, please get books you may need to study from, get a drink, use the restroom, etc. so that you can stay in the classroom the entire time. We want the entire school to be quiet during exams so that they can be done as effectively as possible without distractions. Thank you!

Officer Transfer/ Dedication, Spring Picnic, & Yearbooks

Officer transfer and dedication occurred yesterday, Monday, May 16, 2022. This is when each of the current Student Association officers swore in next year's SA officers and gave a representative gift for their office. Pastor Ferguson led in a prayer of dedication for the new SA officers. He then invited the new NHS and Class of 2023 officers for the next year to the stage. He gave a prayer of blessing on the new leaders for the 2022-2023 school year.

Following this, the yearbook was presented to the school. This year’s yearbook theme is A New You and is a large yearbook of 221 color pages and a color inset of recent school events. The editor, Samantha Woolford-Hunt, presented the yearbook, and assistant editor Zothile Sibanda read the dedication to Mrs. April Younker, home skills (home ec) and foods teacher.

Then the spring picnic began. Students chose which events they wanted to participate in. There was a senior vs school soccer game and opportunities to play pickle ball and table tennis, and to do chalk drawing. Following the game, there was a relay race on the field. Seniors came in first with 3:36:92, juniors in second, sophomores in third with 3:53:36, and freshmen in fourth with 4:01:32.

During lunch, the yearbooks were handed out to the students. We thank the PPI and parent volunteers for helping with the meal. The last event of the day was a baseball game with the seniors winning over the school 13 to 5.

We are thankful for the picture perfect and temperature perfect weather and that we could enjoy the activities of the day without any injuries.

Senior Kamaire Jones drew pictures of each of the yearbook staff!

Chapels This Week

On Monday, Jacob Elanko, senior class pastor, shared how he grew up in the great city of New York. His family were his heroes and surrounded him with love. He had a wonderful loving family, but on August 5, 2016, he suddenly had to confront the difficult question, “Why do bad things happen to good people?” This is when he found out that his father had died of a sudden heart attack. The brief answer is that we live in a sinful world, but one must remember God is a God of promises. At eleven, he started to doubt God; however, with this terrible loss, he realized that Jesus is the only hope to be able to see his dad again. He encouraged us to give all to God and come out from behind the masks. He read Psalm 34:18: “The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” It’s time for each of us to stop masking our brokenness. We are all sinners and broken; however, God is a great Savior. Let’s experience the changes in our lives as we give all to Jesus!

Today (Tuesday) Max Snyder, AA sophomore, presented chapel on the topic of prayer. He told a story of their recent music tour when he went to Busch Gardens. While at the top of drop tower, the ride stopped due to a technical problem. He was terrified and began to pray. He then told of another episode of intense prayer in his life. Three years ago while having a water balloon fight with family at a birthday party, he stepped on a sharp object and later had to get ten stitches! We pray in serious episodes in our life, and he asked, “Shouldn’t we, like Daniel, not only pray when we are 'in a lions den,' but also continuously?" People knew that Daniel regularly prayed and turned to him when Nebuchadnezzar’s dream could not be remembered nor interpreted. Like Jesus who prayer regularly to His dad, we need to pray regularly with our Heavenly dad. He concluded his talk by having each of us pray the Lord's Prayer together.

Junior Class Cookie Dough Fundraiser Continues

Now that the other class fundraisers have concluded the juniors would like to continue to sell the unexpected extra cookie dough we received last December. The remaining cookie dough containers can store over a year in the freezer. They have been kept frozen since December and are available for anyone interested in supporting the Junior class and enjoying fresh cookies. Each container can make 30 cookies. We are selling them at a discounted price of $10. Please stop by Atkins’ classroom to pick some up or contact any junior who would be happy to pick one up for you. We still have many chocolate chip available.
