Thank You for Making Teacher Appreciation Week Special

We thank PPI (Parents Positively Involved) for going out of their way to provide tasty breakfast items for the faculty and staff during Teacher Appreciation Week. Various parents were involved in preparing breakfast dishes each day. The Student Association also put up a temporary faculty and staff appreciation wall on the theme wall for students to write notes of appreciation. Next year’s SA officers surprised the faculty with donuts, singing, and a devotional thought at the beginning of our faculty/staff meeting this past Wednesday.

At the end of the year, teachers and staff are often tired and stressed, but your tasty expressions of appreciation and notes of kindness have lifted our spirits and energy levels for these last few busy weeks. Thank you to each of you (including PMC) for your involvement in this week; it is greatly appreciated.

Spanish II Reading Project

This week in Spanish II classes, the students read books to each other that they created while in last year’s Spanish I class. It was a good way to practice their reading and to notice the progression they have achieved while in Spanish classes. Thank you, Mrs. Silvestre, for this creative assignment and way to note students' progression.

Final Exam/Assessment Schedule

& Graduation Practice

Final exams start on Tuesday, May 24. Please note when your exams are scheduled for and carefully prepare for them so that you can do well in each of your classes. The first day begins at 9:00 AM to provide you more time to prepare. If your transportation requires you to arrive at the school at 8:00 AM, then please go to the Commons.

If you have a study hall (or band) during the first exam slot of the day, then you do not need to arrive until devotions (or your first final of the day, whichever comes first). Please see Mrs. Meekma in the office to excuse your class or if you have any questions. Be sure to sign in at the front office if you arrive after the first exam time.

If you have a break in between two finals (for example, on Wednesday you have a 10:15 AM class final and no 11:10 AM class final [such as a study hall or CSA], then you must go to study hall. You may not leave campus and walk over to Apple Valley or anywhere else.

Please remember that students must stay in the classroom for the entire exam class period. You may not go "get books," "get a drink," etc. when you are done with your exam.

Before the exam begins, please get books you may need to study from, get a drink, use the restroom, etc. so that you can stay in the classroom the entire time. We want the entire school to be quiet during exams so that they can be done as effectively as possible without distractions. Thank you!

Chapels This Week - NHS Cause Week

The week of May 3-6, 2022, was the sixteenth annual NHS Cause Week.  During the week, the National Honor Society (NHS) was responsible for the morning devotions. During Cause Week, NHS raises awareness of various causes and is often involved in raising funds to help a certain cause somewhere in the world. This time, they focused on the theme “How can I impact through…environment, faith, service, leadership and legacy?” NHS led out in song service, read a scripture for each day, and introduced the speaker for the day.

On Tuesday, Pastor Silburn Reid asked "What do we have in our hands?" He made analogies between normal objects and who possesses them. For example, a tennis racket isn’t very useful in many people's hands, but if Serena Williams uses it, world records can be made. Or the staff Moses carried that, with God’s power, parted the Red Sea. Moses wasn’t a good man early in his life, but God worked through him and made him good. God sees potential in people even if their faith is “unemployed.” To close, Pastor Reid encouraged us to put what we have in God’s hands.

To begin chapel on Wednesday, senior Alex Aguilera presented a game for the audience. The game was called "Sound it Out!" The objective was to decipher sentences to understand their meaning. Alex’s lesson from this game was not to gloss over things in the Bible, but instead, take the time to understand what God has told us.

Then NHS members took part in a panel discussion. Megan Woods, Nate Miller, Fio Oudri, and Alexia Gayle were the participants. The topic of the discussion was service. The panel expressed two main points when it comes to service:

  1. Be kind

  2. Don’t overthink it, keep it simple.

Being kind to someone or doing something as simple as smiling can be the best way of service on a daily basis.

On Thursday, Dr. Janet Ledesma from the AU Leadership department, talked about the four pillars of NHS:

  1. Leadership

  2. Scholarship

  3. Service

  4. Character

They are not only for those that were inducted but for each of us; we should all carry the responsibility of these four pillars. She had each of us read Isaiah 43:1: “I have called you by name—you are mine,” but instead of saying “I” we inserted our own name, personalizing it. While focusing on service, she encouraged each of us to help others not so that we can get a reward, but because we love the Lord and so that others can see Jesus through us.

After another game with Alex Aguilera, our guest speaker today (Friday) was Ms. Danielle Pilgrim. Her topic was legacy, one Andrews Academy is well acquainted with. She shared a story about a man, Nick Vujicic, who was born without arms or legs. Nick struggled with his self worth and even attempted to take his own life, but then he recognized everyone has a purpose. He is now married with a family and is a Christian evangelist and motivational speaker.

As humans, we cannot choose the family we are born into, what we look like, etc. However, we can choose how we live our lives.

To leave a good legacy, Ms. Pilgrim said we need to do the following:

  1. Know our self-worth

  2. Help others succeed along the way

Legacy is not about individual accomplishments; instead, it’s about the impact we leave behind.
