Spring has “sprung” at Andrews Academy. Thank you, Ms. Chao and your student workers, for your creativity in putting together the spring Commons bulletin board. At a glance you may notice the flowers, but up close you will see that they are fresh flowers each placed in a chemistry test tube filled with H2O!

Student Association Elections
Andrews Academy strives to lead the way in quality education. An important component of this is nurturing the development of our future leaders. One way we accomplish this is to encourage students to run for various offices in student leadership. If you visited the school recently, you would have noticed that there are many posters in the Commons leading up to the SA elections. Students have been in the midst of campaigning. We have the elections this time of year so that the next year’s SA officers can learn some from this year’s SA officers and then work on careful planning for next school year.
Today (April 12) we had SA speeches and elections. During the assembly, the description of each office was presented by current SA officers and then candidates made their speeches. Students voted during lunch. Results will be announced tomorrow. Please be praying for the choices that were made and for their leadership for the next school year.

Community Vespers
The Friday evening service of Student Week of Prayer took place in the Howard Performing Arts Center and was open to the community. After singing together and enjoying a special music, Evan Keyes, AA senior, shared how people are afraid of the dark and told about some of the pranks he played on his brothers—he being the one who scared his siblings in the dark! He reflected on the darkest time of his life: spring of 2020 during the lockdowns. He found himself in an endless loop of just being on the computer all the time, not just for online classes but also between classes and after school, he continued to play computer games, all the time in isolation. He prayed asking God to break this pattern. It wasn’t until he prayed for “complete victory,” giving everything to Jesus, that he experienced victory. Like the disciples in Luke 8 who were trying to fight the storm with their own skills, they finally gave up and gave it completely to Jesus! He encouraged each to give everything to Jesus and experience complete victory, to remember that His LIGHT expels all darkness. It was a beautiful and meaningful service to conclude the student Week of Prayer.

Baby Chickens Have Arrived
Today the baby chickens arrived in the biology classroom. Numerous students have been asking about when the baby chickens would arrive—some even started asking in February! If students want to, they can take the baby chickens out of the cage and let them walk over their desk or hold them while doing the classroom activities of the day. Everyone enjoys them…until they leave little “treasures” on student desks! Part of playing with the chickens is that students have to clean up after the chickens when “accidents” happen. If you have a few minutes, stop by the classroom and say hi to the baby chickens.

Chapels this Week
Monday’s chapel began with special music by a quartet of Caleb Braswell, Jacob Elanko, Nico Goncalves, and Evan Keyes (accompanied by Claire Yang). In light of the upcoming Student Association elections, Pastor Glassford shared a devotion on leadership. When under pressure, our true colors show. Pastor Glassford encouraged us to be serious when voting for our new leaders. Just as the foolish man built his house on sand, we must make sure we have a strong foundation. This foundation not only applies to our leadership, but also in our personal lives. Pastor Glassford reminded us to check where we’re at with God and make sure we have a strong foundation.
Pastor Lindsey Pratt, PMC youth pastor & AA chaplain, was the speaker for today's (Tuesday) chapel service. Pastor Pratt piggybacked on Pastor Glassford’s message from Monday about leadership. She reminded us that everyone has a sphere of influence and can be a leader, even with only one “follower.” When Pastor Pratt was in fifth grade, she had to use individual notecards to take notes for a research paper. As she got older, and technology advanced, she wondered why she couldn’t use the computers for research and writing instead. She didn’t end up using this technique later, like her teacher said, but she did learn a value for the principles behind the process. Pastor Pratt encouraged us to pray, read a devotional, or write for our spiritual lives as she shared how she journaled for her devotional time while in high school. The process can be different for everyone, but be sure to make time for God in your life.

Film Premiere
|
|
The film tells the story of the DePaiva family who moved from Andrews University in 2002 to pastor the Koror church on the island nation of Palau, only to suffer a shocking tragedy. It’s the incredible true story of Melissa DePaiva’s survival, a story of how faith and forgiveness emerged from an appalling crime.
Both Melissa and her husband, Michael Gibson, will attend the documentary premiere event, along with the Return to Palau director, Michelle Hamel (mother of AA student, Owen Hamel), a 1995 graduate of Andrews Academy, and producer Ann Hamel.
A reception will be held after the event, including an opportunity to meet and greet Melissa and Michael Gibson.
No tickets required. Program is FREE of charge,
and all are invited to attend.
