Dear AA Families,

I hope this letter finds you well. As we approach the end of the semester and my tenure here at Andrews Academy, I want to express my gratitude for your unwavering support over the years. My time at Andrews Academy has been both challenging and rewarding, and I leave with mixed emotions.

As we move closer to the conclusion of the school year, there are several important details to keep in mind. Attendance is crucial to student learning, especially with the limited time remaining in the semester. It is important for students to be present and attentive in class.

Here are some important dates to remember:

Concerts and Activities:

  • Farewell Celebration for the Ferguson Family: This Wednesday, May 1, from 4:00 - 7:00 PM in the Lincoln and Hoosier Rooms at the Andrews University Campus Center.

  • Vocal and Bells Concert: Tuesday, May 7, at 7:00 PM at the Howard. This will be Mr. Martin's final concert, and we encourage you to attend to show appreciation for his ministry at Andrews Academy.

  • Orchestra and Band Concert: Thursday, May 9, at 7:00 PM at the Howard. All are welcome to attend this free concert also.

  • SA Spring Picnic: Monday, May 13, from 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM. This will be a half-day for students. Refreshments will be provided. Although the yearbook distribution is typically scheduled for this day, it has been delayed due to circumstances beyond our control. Thank you for your understanding.

  • SA Beach Church: Sabbath, May 18. Further details will be provided as the event approaches.

Graduation 2024:

  • Class Night: Thursday, May 23, at 7:00 PM in AA's Richard T. Orrison Chapel. Seniors will receive six tickets for this event, during which students will be recognized for their achievements, and parents will be celebrated through student tributes.

  • Consecration: Friday, May 24, at 8:00 PM at the Village Adventist Church. Seniors will be dedicated for service.

  • Sabbath School: Sabbath, May 25, at 10:00 AM in AA's Richard T. Orrison Chapel, featuring senior parent tributes, musical selections, etc.

  • Baccalaureate Service: Sabbath, May 25, at 11:45 AM at PMC. Arrive early.

  • Senior Vespers and Faculty Party: Saturday evening, May 25, 7:45 PM at Andrews Academy. Students will be transported to a prearranged destination via AU transportation department.

  • Commencement Service: Sunday, May 26, at 11:00 AM at PMC.

Please note that there have been recent changes from the Andrews University Risk Management Office regarding trips, tours, and school-sponsored activities. As a result, we will be sending a blanket hold harmless agreement later this week that must be signed by all appropriate parties (students and parents/guardians). It will cover all activities for the rest of the school year. All parent/adult volunteers will also need to sign one if you will be volunteering at an event.

I look forward to seeing you at some of the activities mentioned above, and thank you once again for your support during my time at Andrews Academy. I leave with pride, knowing I have had the privilege to serve this community with distinction.

Blessings,

Pastor Mario Ferguson
Principal

Recreation Night - Volleyball Games

Periodically there are recreation nights that focus on a particular sport. This past Thursday, several teams were formed and enjoyed a fun evening of volleyball together. (April 25, 2024)

A couple of faculty and staff also joined in the games. Besides the players, many classmates were there to cheer their friends on.

Mrs. Helen Christoffel of the Radiant Way Visits AA

Andrews Academy was honored to have Mrs. Helen Christoffel and her son visit the Academy on Thursday (April 25, 2024). Many of you may have seen this sign by the front doors of the school and may have wondered what the story was. Mrs. Christoffel worked at the front office of the Academy at our present location and at our previous location in Bell Hall for many years.

As you see by the smile on her face, she was known for her radiant example of friendship and cheerfulness. She was also known for her dedication to Andrews Academy and all that she did for the school. As she visited the school, she shared that she “loved working here.” Her colleagues have said that they loved working with Mrs. Christoffel, and that she helped make the school a wonderful place to work at.

Chapel Recap

On Wednesday, student leaders each had a laptop and groups of students gathered together in the chapel. Student groups then enjoyed a group Kahoot game of Bible trivia together. (April 24, 2024)

On Thursday, Ava Trutwein, AA sophomore, had best friends work together to direct one of them through a maze while blindfolded. She had two other students who yelled out words to distract the process. She then shared how it’s hard to listen to God because there are so many distractions. She reminded us that if we ever feel lost in the dark to turn to God’s light for direction. (April 25, 2024)

On Friday, there was no chapel due to MAP Testing and e-learning.

Important Attendance Information

  • Pre-arranged Absences: Please be sure to fill out a pre-arranged absence card if you know in advance that you will be missing school due to a doctor/dentist/orthodontist appointment, trip, basketball tournament, driver's test, etc. These cards can be found in the main office or online. A parent's signature is required, then the office, and teacher(s) of the class(es) that you will miss.
  • Class Schedule Adjustment (CSA) Requests: A CSA is available for students who have a study hall at the beginning or ending of the school day or will be working during a study hall during the school day. A CSA is required for students who leave the Academy to attend classes at Andrews University, who are going to work off campus, or who wish to begin the school day later or leave earlier on a regular basis. The CSA request form must be filled out and signed by everyone indicated on the form before the student stops attending their study hall. Students must adhere to CSA guidelines that are printed on the CSA application. Any violation may cause the CSA to be revoked. I will email students and parents when a CSA is approved.

  • Other Absences: Parents, please call the front office (269-471-3138) or email aaattendance@andrews.edu if your student is going to be absent or tardy. These are the preferable methods.

Please provide the reason why your child will not be attending school and how long you think they will be out.

Parents/Guardians are the only authorized individuals who can excuse a student's attendance. When emailing, parents must send correspondence from their email account to maintain the validity of the request. Please include the name of the student.

From the Sourcebook (pg. 83):

Students who miss three (3) consecutive school days due to illness must provide written documentation from a certified medical professional corroborating the necessity of that absence.

For any attendance questions that you would like to ask by email, please direct these questions to aaattendance@andrews.edu.

Thank you!

Opting into Texting for One Call Now Alerts

Andrews Academy utilizes One Call Now, an automated messaging service, to contact students and parents about school cancellations (including snow days), upcoming events, and urgent information, etc.

Please make sure that we have the phone number that you would like to have contacted. We also send an email, put the announcement on our Facebook and Instagram pages, and alert local TV stations (WSBT, WNDU, ABC57).

To receive a text notification instead of a call (text works best), please text “ALERT” to 22300. Please make sure that you have given us the number that you would like to be texted on as well. Email ginam@andrews.edu with any changes. Thank you!

We do have a limited supply of uniforms for sale at AA (cash or check only) during office hours.

AA's Lands' End Store

Please review the Sourcebook (pgs 79-81) for more information regarding uniforms. Only approved logoed uniform wear is allowed. A solid-color, long sleeved undershirt may be worn under the AA short-sleeved polo (no writing should be visible on the undershirt). If a student is wearing an AA logoed jacket, they should also have an AA logoed shirt underneath. Only AA logoed jackets are allowed to be worn in the building.

The PE uniform can only be worn during PE class.

School Communications

The E-Sanjo and other communications from the school, including classroom teacher communications, use the email address(es) that you (and your parents) have recorded in FACTS when you registered for Andrews Academy. We will also use students' AU email address. Some have been wondering why they are not receiving their school communications to a certain email. If you wish to have communications sent to a specific email address, please send the change to ginam@andrews.edu. Thank you!
