Black History Assembly
To mark the last week of February, which is Black History Month, Andrews Academy prepared an assembly highlighting Black students, staff, alumni and community members and celebrating their contributions, as well as the contributions of those in the past, to our lives today.
Pastor Earl Baldwin spoke for chapels this week, with his messages pertaining to Black History Month, and he concluded his messages with the powerful note that we need to reach out and touch "a live line," the Source of all power, who will give us the power to take the baton of "legacy" and pass it forward.
During today's assembly, we had various musical performances from both AA students and alumni—showcasing a beautiful medley of praise songs rooted in Black culture, music and history, from Lift Every Voice to traditional songs like Amazing Grace. We heard from different students: Christiana Michel (senior) read us the poem which was our theme for this week, "Still I Rise" by Maya Angelou. Kofi Amponsah (junior) powerfully recited a part of Martin Luther King Jr.'s iconic speech, "I Have a Dream." Gabby Roper (sophomore) read us an original poem that she entitled "Regardless," reminding us that we must can take pride and hold hope for our future because of the sacrifices made by those in the past.
Today we also recognized two individuals—Dr. Ruth Horton and Elder Jeremiah—for their contributions in our community. They received the Andrews Academy Black History Change-Makers Award. Dr. Horton currently serves as the Director of Education for the Lake Union Conference, where she oversees a total of 73 PreK-12 schools in Illinois, Indiana, Lake Region, Michigan, and Wisconsin. Elder Jeremiah is currently working with the Habitat for Humanity (in St. Joseph county) as the Homebuyer Support Manager, working with families to fulfill their dreams of owning a home. We are grateful for their lives dedicated to the service and well-being of not just the community, but our students at AA as well.
Pastor Ferguson and Natalie Makumbe (senior) were crucial to making this program a success, and we are so very grateful to all students and guests for their participation in today's assembly. May we use the event as a reminder that "better days are coming" and that we can anticipate a world where division will be no more.

AA Uniforms Available from Lands' End
We have renewed our relationship with Lands’ End for uniform needs. More selections for uniforms are now included, such as a button-down shirt, a long-sleeved polo, and a sweater. Click on the option(s) that you would like, then choose the size (kid or adult). Please be mindful that Andrews Academy is not responsible for your orders.
We are working on other jacket options.
|
|
Please review the Sourcebook (pgs 79-81) for more information regarding uniforms. Only approved logoed uniform wear is allowed. A solid-color, long sleeved undershirt may be worn under the AA short-sleeved polo (no writing should be visible on the undershirt). If a student is wearing a fleece/squall jacket, they should also have an AA logoed shirt underneath.

Partnership With Andrews University - Biology Class Field Trip
Andrews Academy is blessed to be part of the Andrews University campus. It provides opportunities that many other high school students cannot experience. The biology classes went to the PT cadaver lab to see the organ systems they have been studying during their unit on Anatomy and Physiology. Students did very well observing, reviewing the systems we have been studying, and introducing the remaining systems we will complete before spring break. We appreciate AU’s PT department for allowing us to participate in this unique high school learning experience. (February 21, 2023)
