Andrews Academy's

Official Newsletter

July 13, 2022

Dear Families,

I hope you are enjoying your summer. Andrews Academy continues to work diligently to make sure the facility and its programs are ready for the 2022-23 school year. Due to Mrs. April Younker's retirement, we are currently looking for a Home Economics teacher. This individual will be responsible for teaching two classes per semester as a contract teacher. If you are interested or have a recommendation, please contact me at aaprincipal@andrews.edu.

This past Sabbath we had a great experience at Weko Beach. One of our students, Simeon Jackman, made a public declaration to follow Jesus through baptism. Congratulation to Simeon on his life changing decision. If any of our students, families, or friends would like to be baptized this summer, please contact me.

The bookstore has started its book buy back process. Please review this E-Sanjo for information that was given to AA to be shared with students and parents. Any questions you may have regarding buy back, books, uniforms, etc., please contact the Andrews University Bookstore. The bookstore is the agency that we have contracted with to fulfill our textbook and uniform needs.

We are seeking volunteers for the 2022-23 in the following areas:

  • Intramurals After School Sports Program: We are trying once again to develop a strong program. We need parents to partner with us to provide a meaningful experience for our students.

  • Parents Spiritually Impacting Andrews Academy: This is a new principal’s initiative. We are asking parents to partner with us as we continue to raise the standards against the devil. We will not allow the evil one who is roaring like a lion to have our children.

  • Berrien County Youth Fair Booth Monitors: We need your assistance with coverage for the AA promotional booth from August 15-20. If you are willing and interested in volunteering, sign up for a time slot (or more) at https://signup.com/go/ezMYLoz. Volunteers will receive a free ticket to the fair for the day(s) for which they have signed up.

Background Check: All volunteers working with AA students must complete the Sterling Volunteers background check. In some cases, you may be asked to be finger printed.

Andrews Academy mourns the loss of Ivan Flores, father of AA students Luis and Oscar Flores. He recently passed away in an automobile accident. Mr. Flores was a strong supporter of Christian Education. We solicit your prayers and support for this family. We await service details and will share them once available. Friends of the Flores family have started a GoFundMe. We long for the day when there will be no more death. Blessed are those who mourn for they will be comforted. Matthew 5:4

Please review the school calendar regarding when the Academy will resume classes. If you have questions or need clarification, please contact Mrs. Meekma in the office (ginam@andrews.edu or 269-471-3138).

Blessings,

Pastor Mario Ferguson
Principal

Farewell, Mr. Steeves

THANK YOU, Mr. Chris Steeves, for your five years of service to Andrews Academy. These above picture was taken with his summer crew on his last day of work (June 3, 2022). He has worked hard to keep Andrews Academy a clean, safe, and well functioning place for our students. We especially appreciate his extra effort and time during the COVID years, which required so much more work for him and his maintenance crew.

On Thursday, June 2, the faculty and staff had a meal at Fire & Ice to honor Mr. Steeves and conclude our school year together. Pastor Mario Ferguson, AA principal, shared some departing words, presented a small gift of appreciation, and had a prayer of blessing over Mr. Steeves. Pastor Ferguson and Mr. Steeves were prayer partners these last two years and began each school day praying together.

We wish Mr. Steeves well as he retires. We are glad that he is still in the area and will be able to visit AA often. We pray that God’s blessings go with him!

Praying for Mr. Steeves as he was leaving, and Ms. Kim, new English teacher, at the end of the school year.

Senior Pictures & Ads for Yearbook

Senior pictures are needed for yearbook, class night, and the class composite to be hung in the AA Commons. Yearbook will need your senior and baby pictures by Friday, October 21, 2022. We encourage you to get your senior picture done during the summer before the busy school year begins. Photographers get busy in the late summer and fall, so you may want to book an appointment early. PLEASE PLAN AHEAD and get your picture done in a timely manner.

Please send an electronic senior picture (JPEG) to the yearbook team (aayearbook@andrews.edu). You do not have to go to a professional photographer for this picture, but please make sure you follow the picture requirements below. If not, the yearbook team may request that you send an alternative.

Pictures for both the yearbook and senior ads must adhere to the following requirements:

  • In color
  • Picture from waist up (not entire body)
  • Portrait/vertical mode (not landscape/horizontal)
  • Attire per AA guidelines—no sleeveless shirts or bare shoulders, no low cut or cropped tops, no jewelry
  • High-resolution JPEG (at least 4x6, 300 ppi resolution)

Baby Photos

By the same date (October 21), please submit a baby picture as well. The baby picture will be used by yearbook as well as for senior bulletin board and class night purposes. Please submit a high-resolution JPEG baby picture. If you cannot scan the picture, you may bring the baby picture to the yearbook staff, and they will scan it for you.

Also, please plan ahead for senior yearbook ad nights on Monday and Wednesday, September 12 & 14, at 5:00 PM. At that time, you and your parents can purchase senior ads for the yearbook (see the messages to seniors in the back of previous yearbooks for examples).

If you have any questions or need more information, please email Ms. Kim at joellek@andrews.edu.

New English Teacher, Ms. Kim

Hello! My name is Ms. Joelle Kim, and it is a privilege to be working at Andrews Academy as one of the English teachers this upcoming school year. It is my second year of teaching after graduating from Andrews University with a B.A. in English with a Secondary Education concentration, with a minor in TESOL. I spent my first year of teaching also at AA, but as a contract teacher—so, it is super exciting to get to be “officially” part of the teaching team! It is my passion and desire to guide students to develop a comfortability with English and (hopefully) enjoy it just as much as I do! I will also be the yearbook sponsor.

Outside of teaching, I enjoy many different hobbies. It may sound cliche, but I do enjoy reading and writing in my free time outside of the classroom setting. I do some pencil sketching as well! When I have the spare time, I can also be found playing volleyball at the open gyms at the Wellness Center.

I am so excited to begin the new school year with everyone and can’t wait to get more connected with all of you through all the activities the year has to offer! I want to share a short verse that is my theme for this year, 1 Peter 1:13 which reads: “Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ” (ESV). I hope that we can all prepare our minds for the action to come this upcoming school year, but first and foremost, prepare our minds to set our hopes on the future where Jesus will come to take us home!

Partnering for Eternity Scholarship Program Fundraiser

The 2022-23 Partnering for Eternity team is already fund raising this summer with Operation: “Can Do!” As their families consume beverages in cans or plastic/glass bottles with MI deposit labels on them, they’re collecting them in a designated space in their home, taking them to a recycling facility and donating the deposit money to PFE. It may seem like small change, but if you join us, even $30 of deposit money from each family adds up! Plus, imagine if we got our extended families, work places, and other local businesses involved. We raise 30% of the scholarship money every year, as well as money toward our own PFE endowment fund. We’ll be stretching our faith toward a $22,500 goal!

Start collecting, recycling and donating TODAY! Here’s the link to donate:

For more information about this fundraiser or PFE in general, contact the coordinator, Joelle Ashley at joellea@fullylive.com.

AA "Spring" Cleaning"

Ms. Alia Pellegrini and her crew of student workers continue to be very busy this summer. Each room's furnishings are removed and the floor either waxed or carpet steam cleaned. Each piece of furniture is also  cleaned. The light fixtures throughout the school are cleaned, not only on the outside, but are also unlatched and cleaned on the inside as well. Mr. Ron Norton is also doing some painting around the school this summer. Thank you, Ms. Pellegrini, Mr. Norton, and crew, for your efforts in preparing the school for the Fall.

The gymnasium floor was scrubbed and resurfaced by a company in preparation for another school year. The floor looks great!
