Latin American Culture Class

Students of the Latin American Culture class participated in what is considered a Mexican folk art. Papel picado ("perforated paper") is a decorative craft made by cutting elaborate designs into sheets of tissue paper. The designs are commonly cut from as many as 40-50 colored tissue papers stacked together, and using a guide or template, a small mallet, and chisels, creating as many as fifty banners at a time. Papel picado can also be made by folding tissue paper and using small, sharp scissors. This approach was what was done during their class.

Common themes include birds, floral designs, and skeletons. Papel picados are commonly displayed for both secular and religious occasions, such as Easter and Christmas, as well as during weddings, quinceañeras, baptisms, and christenings. In the streets of Mexico, papel picados are often strung together to create a banner that can either be hung across alleyways or displayed in the home. The students displayed their final products in the ceiling of the classroom.

Chapel - Guidance Counselor Week

The AA guidance counselor, Ms. Leslie Nieves, has created a week of special presentations. However, today’s scheduled guest speaker was not feeling well and had to cancel. Pastor Mario Ferguson and Ms. Nieves had a question and sharing time together. Often students face bad grades, family issues, the stress of COVID, and more. These create feelings of being sad and lost in the midst of everything. Depression and anxiety can set in as a result. Then they discussed signs and symptoms of depression. Pastor Ferguson then shared how the prophet Elijah, who had done great things, felt hopeless after the brook dried up. The same God who brought Elijah out of feeling helpless has a plan for each of us with times of hopelessness that we may face. Remember to pray and act on your prayers, don’t just pray and be on your way.

Free Counseling Offered at Andrews University

The Andrews Community Counseling Center (ACCC) will have openings for many new clients when they reopen in January 2022 (although individuals interested in services are encouraged to call now and leave a confidential voicemail message to get their name toward the top of the waiting list). Graduate-level practicum students who provide these free counseling services at the ACCC have training in counseling adults, adolescents, and children. Counseling sessions are completely confidential.

During the pandemic, the ACCC knows that the need for mental health services is great, and they also recognize that the need for physical safety is essential. Therefore, all counseling in-person sessions will require counselors and clients to wear a face mask covering the nose and mouth at all times, regardless of vaccination status. For those unable to attend in-person, some teletherapy services may also be available using confidential Zoom sessions.
