Andrews Academy's

Official Newsletter

April 1, 2022

Dear AA Families,

We have come to the end of another week here at Andrews Academy. Even with the challenges, we can declare that we serve a great God. As we navigate through the semester, we invite you to partner with us to provide a Christ-centered experience for the students. Next week, April 4-8, is our student-led Week of Prayer. Please pray for this ministry as we proclaim that Jesus is the Light in the midst of darkness. The world is a dark place, and as Christians we are called to be the light of the world.

This week during our Guidance Assembly, we had a presentation on Bias. We were reminded that we are fearfully and wonderfully made. Please review the E-Sanjo article for further information regarding this presentation.

Work Day:
We extend an invitation to those who are willing and available to help this Sunday, April 3, from 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM. We need help removing unwanted items from the shop areas, windows cleaned, removal of debris from the school grounds, and assembling new equipment in the physical education department.

Music Department:
The music department along with students represented AA well in Florida. We commend them for all their efforts.

Worship Service Tomorrow:
Tomorrow morning at 10:30 AM, a group from AA will travel to Trinity Adventist Church in Kalamazoo, Michigan. We will share the Gospel through music and the spoken word. Please pray for this ministry. It is our mission to share the love of Christ in all we do.

Matthew 25:35-39:

For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.’ Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink? And when did we see You a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You? When did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?

We are our brothers and sisters keeper. We have a duty to care for each other. Let us show the love of Jesus by helping those in need. We help others to honor God!

Blessings,

Pastor Mario Ferguson

Assemblies this Week

Thursday’s Guidance Assembly, led by AU professor Dr. Woolford-Hunt, was titled Winning the Mind Wars. The Bible text used as a foundation at the beginning of the presentation was Psalm 139:14: "We are fearfully and wonderfully made." This text supports our beliefs that we are all loved and made by God, and that God’s creation is incredibly complex, and it will take us eternity to fully understand God’s creative genius as expressed in the creation of humans. God has allowed us to gain insight into some aspects of our biology, physiology, biochemistry, and psychology among other disciplines. The presentation focused on the psychology of thought and how our thinking impacts our behavior.

  • The psychological theory that supported the presentation premise was from Nobel Prize winning psychologist Dr. Daniel Kahneman, who described humans as having two systems of thinking. System 1 is unconscious, fast, automatic, effortless, involuntary. In contrast, System 2 is slow, conscious, explicit, and deliberate. He noted that we engage in System 1 thinking the majority of our day and hence much more than Systems 2 thinking.
  • Students participated in an activity to demonstrate two systems of thinking.
  • We reviewed the fact that System 1 thinking relies almost exclusively on "associative memory," pairings that we learn and act on automatically. System 1 thinking allows us to navigate our world effortlessly but is prone to us falling prey to our "cognitive biases."
  • We then reviewed and discussed some of the stereotypes, implicit biases/associations, and resulting behaviors (microaggressions) that result from navigating relationships through System 1 thinking exclusively.

The presentation ended with the biblical reminder in Proverbs 23:7: "As a man thinks in his heart, so is he," and the charge to become more aware and to engage in more System 2 thinking so that we can avoid unintentionally hurting people with our words, and so we can create a loving, supportive environment for all students at AA.

Today’s (Friday) Academic Orientation Assembly was an important one for students as they prepare for next school year. The various diplomas and expectations were discussed, as well as a description of classes, so that students, parents, and advisors can start the process of making class selections for next school year. An explanation of what steps are needed to complete the reapplication process was also given. Please begin this process as soon as possible to help ensure that you receive the classes you would like to take. Thank you, Ms., Ivonne Segui-Weiss, AA registrar, for leading in this assembly.

Chapels this Week

On Wednesday, Mr. Hans Figueroa, Loma Linda Academy principal and AA alumnus from the class of 1996, presented chapel on the topic of your “comfort zone.” He told some stories from his life when he moved from Peru to Chicago at the age of ten. In public schools there, he had to learn English and make friends. He didn’t like sweets, so he began giving the cafeteria desserts away to the students who sat together at the “bully” table. He thought this would help him develop friends with them, and at the same time get some protection. At that point in his life, he was very much so not in his “comfort zone.” However he became friends with the bullies, and he is still friends and keeps in contact with them today.

Often when you are not in your “comfort zone,” it is then that you find Jesus. He encouraged each to push your comfort zone, there you will find Jesus. Joshua 1:9: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” Let God tell you what to do, and His answers will change your life.

On Thursday, Pastor Ortiz, PMC pastor and a parent of freshmen Jonathan, presented chapel. He started by sharing how the Free Masons have been influential in shaping the modern world. It’s a very secret society but recently some historians have been given access to their records. Abraham in the old testament kept record of God’s goodness, building alters for all to see His goodness. Pastor Ortiz shared how he keeps a journal to record God’s goodness in his life. He encouraged each of us to record a little note to God every day. This way you will have a record to look back on during the rough times to provide “proof” that God had been faithful in your life!

Today (Friday) we were blessed to have Collegedale Academy’s choir, “OPUS XXII" perform a number of songs for Chapel as part of their midwest tour. They began with Give Me Jesus, an arrangement made by James Lee III, an AA alumnus from the 1990s. One of the parents helping with their midwest tour is also an alumnus of Andrews Academy and knew many students' families, sending greetings to these families. Thank you, choir, for sharing Jesus through music with the Andrews Academy family.
