Andrews Academy's SOW Safari Mission Trip
by Tonya Snyder
There are many ways to usher out the year, and ring in a new one, and the AA SOW Safari class is doing it with gusto! 22 students and 6 chaperones headed out on Tuesday, December 28, for McAllen, Texas. The snow fell gently at O'Hare as we said goodbye to the cold and embraced the relentless heat of the south. It has been unseasonably warm (high 80's) since we arrived, but that has not stopped our enthusiasm.
SOW Safari is a class about embracing what the book of Matthew advises about being the salt and the light, wherever you find yourself. We are residing at the Iglesias Adventista del Septimo dia Mcallen Central del Valle Church in McAllen, Texas. We sleep in Sabbath school rooms, eat authentic and delicious tex-mex meals in the fellowship hall, and cross the street to the local Adventist school (South Texas Christian Academy), to shower and play in the gym.
We are working in a neighborhood that is a 15 minute drive from the church. This neighborhood is a particular mission field for the church that we are staying at, and consists of several mobile homes and yards that are in disrepair and in need of attention. Our army of volunteers has made a big job move fast as we work on different houses performing various jobs. We are focused on removing litter and debris, trimming trees and grass, scrubbing siding, and resealing roofs.
In the late afternoon, we stop work and run a VBS program for the neighborhood kids. In addition to the neighborhood VBS program, our group will be running the entire church service on Sabbath as well as Friday and Saturday evening programming for the youth group. During these services, the SOW Safari students are able to present to each other and the larger community their personal testimonies, worship thoughts, and skits. Many of us have also made good use of our Spanish language skills as much of the population where we are at primarily speak Spanish.
Thank you for praying for our groups safety and effectiveness (our "saltiness", and our "light sharing") as we continue to work in this community into the new year! We look forward to telling more stories of this experience to the student body when we return. Happy New Year!
Tonya (Hippler) Snyder is an AA alumnus ('96) and parent volunteer for this trip.

SOW Safari, Andrews Academy's biennial two-week mission trip, has been an important part of Andrews Academy’s mission since 1986. The name, SOW Safari, speaks to the reason for these trips: Service through construction/renovation of a church or school building, Outreach through Vacation Bible School, and Witness through evangelistic efforts. To date, several hundred people have been baptized through the evangelistic component of these trips, including some of the students themselves!
Mario Ferguson, Marcelo Martins, and Ron Norton are the Andrews Academy faculty on this trip. We thank Richard & Ivette Aguilera, and Tonya Snyder for being parent volunteers for this trip.

Partnering for Eternity Update
The Partnering for Eternity (PFE) scholarship program pairs students with older adults in our community so they can perform common household and yardwork tasks for their “mentor(s).” In return, students benefit from the wisdom and mentorship of the older adults, as well as the financial assistance toward their Christian education. Not only are students developing life skills such as commitment, leadership, communication, interpersonal relations and empathy, they are also learning the value of service and building generational bridges to last for eternity.
This year, as an extra special activity to celebrate the holidays, the PFE coordinators provided students and mentors with all the materials needed to build a graham cracker “gingerbread” nativity scene, or other scene with spiritual emphasis. Check out some of their creations and smiles.

We had a strong finish to first semester, even amid COVID19 challenges. We’re proud to announce each student successfully finished their required visits and corresponding visit “reflections,” which means each one will be receiving their $800.00 tuition scholarship!
Speaking of money, our students helped raise the $12,500.00 of scholarship funds we needed by writing letters with their mentors to send to over 300 alumni of AA. This amount is 30% of the total scholarship; the other 70% is provided by a grant. This means we will offset tuition costs for our 26 students by a total of $41,600.00 this year! Bravo PFE Team!
We are also seeking funds to start an endowment, the interest of which will help us in future years reach the 30% even faster. We need $25,000.00 to start it and have raised $22,365.00! We expect to raise the rest even before you read this, and praise Jesus in advance, for His provision. We will add to this endowment every year until it reaches $250,000.00, which will roughly pay the entire 30% for 26 students.
As we head full-steam into the new year, we are convinced more than ever that Partnering for Eternity is blessed and guided by Our Best Friend and Savior, Jesus Christ. May we be faithful stewards of this opportunity and continue to serve our community in humility until He comes. -- Amen

Free Counseling Offered at Andrews University
The Andrews Community Counseling Center (ACCC) will have openings for many new clients when they reopen in January 2022 (although individuals interested in services are encouraged to call now and leave a confidential voicemail message to get their name toward the top of the waiting list). Graduate-level practicum students who provide these free counseling services at the ACCC have training in counseling adults, adolescents, and children. Counseling sessions are completely confidential.
During the pandemic, the ACCC knows that the need for mental health services is great, and they also recognize that the need for physical safety is essential. Therefore, all counseling in-person sessions will require counselors and clients to wear a face mask covering the nose and mouth at all times, regardless of vaccination status. For those unable to attend in-person, some teletherapy services may also be available using confidential Zoom sessions.
