Latin American/Hispanic Heritage Week

October 8 & 10 - 8:50 AM

This week during chapel, we are celebrating Hispanic Heritage. Chapel starts five minutes early, at 8:50 AM on Wednesday and Friday. (Thursday is PSAT Testing for grades 9-11, and seniors will be at AU.)

Leadership Retreat

Traditionally, the Andrews Academy experience has been known for strong student leadership resulting from student participation in its curricular and co-curricular experiences. To help develop Seventh-day Adventist Christian leadership qualities of current student leaders, AA took fourteen student leaders to a leadership retreat at Camp Au Sable from October 2-5, 2025. The retreat, hosted by the Lake Union Conference, gave student leaders an opportunity to share ideas and experiences with leaders from all of the other Lake Union academies in a spiritually charged environment.

The structure of the weekend traditionally includes a keynote speaker who focuses on several aspects of Christian leadership. Several breakout sessions give leaders opportunities to meet with and glean ideas from students from the other schools who hold the same office. Additionally, each academy has time to talk and brainstorm ideas specific to their local situations. And, as with all good retreats, there are social and recreational times.

Above and beyond the organized program, Andrews Academy adds a few of their own activities to develop prayerful, thoughtful leadership. Built into the schedule is an opportunity for significant group sharing, which is used to give students time to commit to being used by the Lord as leaders, to make a stand as moral leaders, and to bond through prayer and singing. Leadership Retreat remains an invigorating and spiritually refreshing experience for AA leaders as they return with a renewed commitment to their offices and their God. Please continue to pray for AA and to pray prayers of blessing on the student leadership as they lead throughout this school year.

PSAT Testing Information & Senior Day with AU

This Thursday, October 9

All freshmen, sophomores, and juniors will take the PSAT test on Thursday, October 9. We will dismiss at around 12:00 PM, with no lunch.

Grade 9 will take the PSAT 8/9, and Grades  10 and 11 will take the PSAT/NMSQT that morning from 8:00–12:00. Students should arrive at 7:30 AM. Students arriving after 8:00 AM will not be allowed to take the test. Please arrive on time.

If you have a laptop or iPad, please bring it fully charged on test day. Personal Chromebooks are not permitted by the College Board.

You will also need to download the Bluebook App at least a week in advance. If you do not already have a College Board account, please create one at www.collegeboard.org before test day.

The PSAT, when taken in a student's junior year, is a qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship. We encourage our students to familiarize themselves with the test by taking practice tests online by visiting www.collegeboard.org.

If your student wishes to participate in the PSAT testing, they will need to test on-site. There will not be a make-up PSAT testing date.

Grade 12 will be with AU that day for Senior Day, starting at 8:00 AM at the Howard Performing Arts Center. Your sponsors will give you more information.

If you have any additional questions, please contact me at dionner@andrews.edu.

Please plan for Parent/Teacher Conferences via Zoom on October 22 & 23. School will dismiss at 12:00 PM on both days to accommodate the conferences. Conferences on Wednesday, October 22, will be from 4:00–8:00 PM, and conferences on Thursday, October 23, will be from 2:00–5:00 PM.

Online signups are now open. The last day to sign up is Tuesday, October 21.

If you received an email from your child's teacher inviting you to make an appointment, this may have been an automatic email to all parents of students in their classes. If things are going well for your child in their class, please do not feel like you have to make an appointment with the teacher. If you would like to, you can make an appointment, but making an unnecessary appointment will result in fewer appointments available for those that really need to have a conference.

To sign up online, please go to www.factsmgt.com and complete the following steps:

  1. The parent responsible for enrolling the student should sign in with their own FACTS account, not the student account. The district code is AN-MI. If you have trouble logging in, email ginam@andrews.edu.
  2. Navigate to Family Portal > Calendar > My Classrooms to view events on the calendar. Click an event to view details. Note: While the events show up on October 22, when you click on them, options should be available for both October 22 & 23.
  3. Register for a time slot.
  4. After registering, parents may cancel or change their registration in Family Portal, Calendar, My Classrooms by clicking on the event.

These steps MUST be done for EACH appointment.

Please note that typically only full-time teachers are listed. Contract and college/dual enrollment class teachers aren't listed. If you have a desire to conference with a contract teacher, the office will be able to provide you with contact information. College teachers must be reached through the University.

If spots are filled or there is not a time slot that is workable for you, please feel free to email the teachers through the FACTS portal and schedule an appointment that works for both of you.

We look forward to meeting with you.

Career Seminars & Fair

Next Friday morning, October 17

On Friday of AA's alumni weekend, there will be a special Convocation at 8:00 AM for our students. The speaker will be Ms. Joy Nguigi from the class of 2015.

Following the Alumni Convocation, twelve AA alumni will hold Career Seminars, sharing about their occupation, the education needed for their career, and more. There will also be a Career Fair in the gym. No classes will meet at AA during that time. The regular school schedule will resume at 11:00 (11:10 class).

Students, please click on the link to sign up for Career Seminars. Give your top three choices, although you will only attend two seminars and the Career Fair.

Deadline: Please sign up by this Sunday, October 12, or you will be assigned to two seminars.

Please contact Mrs. Meekma in the front office if you have any questions.

Students with CSAs in the morning that are NOT because of college classes should plan to attend. Attendance will be taken accordingly.

Opting into Texting for One Call Now

Andrews Academy utilizes One Call Now, an automated messaging service, to contact students and parents about school cancellations, upcoming events, and performances, etc.

Please make sure that we have the phone number that you would like to have contacted. For school closings due to weather, we also send an email, put the announcement on our Facebook and Instagram pages, and alert local TV stations (WSBT, WNDU, ABC57).

To receive a text notification instead of a call (text works best), please text “ALERT” to 22300. Please make sure that you have given us the number that you would like to be texted on as well. Email ginam@andrews.edu with any changes. Thank you!

Important Attendance Policy Updates

ATTENDANCE EVALUATION

Each student begins each semester with an attendance record of zero points. All absences and tardies are assigned a weight of 1 point. The FACTS system includes separate attendance codes, allowing for clear categorization and reporting:

  • A (Absence)

  • AE (Excused Absence)

  • T (Tardy)

  • TE (Excused Tardy)

The AS attendance code is assigned a weight of 0 and is used to mark school-related absences (e.g., for approved school trips or activities). These absences do not count against the student’s attendance record.

Students are allowed one long tour per semester.

PROCEDURES

Each school day, the student who was absent or tardy without excuse is notified of the record in FACTS, the student information system. Parents and students both receive email notifications. If the student believes the record to be incorrect, or has any question about the record, it is that student’s responsibility to contact the school office or attendance officer or submit to the school office a written excuse from a parent/guardian within 3 school days to remove those points. Excuses received between the 4th and 5th days will result in the partial removal of points.

Correction received after five days generally will not be accepted. In instances where a student is absent for several consecutive days, such as for an extended illness, two school days are allotted following the last absence to submit an excuse.

A student is responsible for all course work missed while absent with or without excuse.

Absence Policy
After 5 unexcused absences per class: Student receives a warning email.
After 8 unexcused absences per class: Student receives a demerit.
After 10 unexcused absences per class: A meeting is scheduled with the student, parents, and attendance officer or another administrator.
After 10 combined excused and unexcused absences per class: Student receives a warning email noting the risk of withdrawal from the class.
After 15 combined excused and unexcused absences per class: A meeting with the registrar is required, and the student may be withdrawn from the class and lose all credit subject to that class, pending a review by the Student Affairs Committee.

Tardy Policy
After 5 unexcused tardies per class: Student receives a warning email.
After 10 unexcused tardies per class: Student receives a demerit.
After 10 total excused and unexcused tardies per class: Student meets with the attendance officer or administrator.

Demerit Review Policy
Demerits related to attendance may be re-evaluated at the end of the semester if the student maintains no unexcused absences or tardies from the date the demerit was issued onward.

A student is eligible to hold an organizational office or leadership position as long as they maintain an attendance score below 7 unexcused absences. A student is also eligible to participate in co-curricular, overnight trips and tours if the attendance score is below 7 unexcused absences. A student is placed on citizenship probation when the attendance score reaches 7 unexcused absences.

Major off-campus school activities include, but are not limited to, overnight trips and tours (see section on Student Citizenship-Citizenship Probation). When a student’s attendance score reaches 7 unexcused absences, the student is placed on citizenship probation. Further unexcused absences could lead to future in-school suspensions. Repeated attendance issues will be referred to the Student Affairs Committee to determine if the student should continue in the Academy and, if so, under what conditions. If these conditions are not successfully adhered to, the student’s enrollment may be discontinued at the time of infractions, at the end of a given semester, or at the end of the school year.

Students who miss five (5) consecutive school days due to illness must provide written documentation from a certified medical professional corroborating the necessity of that absence.

AA Students Step Up!

We’re proud of the incredible students at Andrews Academy! Recently, a teacher purchased a new toilet seat and privacy wall for the A-Wing restroom. Before he even had a chance to install them, three seniors noticed the supplies and decided to take action. On their own time, they installed the new toilet seat and privacy wall—and even fixed the broken stall door handle!

Thank you to these students for taking initiative and making Andrews Academy a better place for everyone. Your pride in your school truly shows!

Freshman Class Fundraiser

Support the freshman class by ordering a delicious homemade meal: Pupusas with curtido & salsa roja, Mexican rice, black beans, and tres leches cake.

Pupusas freeze well, so you can order for future meals also!

Adventist Colleges Abroad Assembly

A representative from Adventist Colleges Abroad (ACA) gave a presentation on the possibilities of going to an Adventist college in many locations around the world during an assembly today (Tuesday). This is an excellent chance to learn a second language and to learn about a new culture. While some are open for academy age students as a summer program, many opportunities are available at the college level for a school year.

If you'd like to know more, see below the lunch menu for information about a meeting at AU tonight.

Chapel Recap: Hispanic Heritage Week

This week’s chapels celebrate Latin American/Hispanic Heritage Week, part of Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15–October 15). Mrs. Marah Silvestre, Andrews Academy’s Spanish teacher, introduced the theme with Psalm 18:2, reminding students that God is our rock, fortress, and protector.

On Monday, sophomore Jonah Bourget led a fun trivia session on Hispanic heritage, including the question: “What mountain range runs through most of South America?” (Answer: the Andes.)

Pastor Amador, a parent of two AA students, on Monday shared his story of growing up in a communist country without access to Christian education and expressed gratitude that his children can now attend a Christian school. Speaking in Spanish with his daughter Dafne translating, he then reflected on Acts 17:26–28, connecting it to the story of Columbus and God’s plan for humanity. He reminded students that while we come from different backgrounds, we are all made in God’s image. Our diversity reflects God’s love, and in unity, we show His character more fully.
He closed by affirming that we are all part of God’s family — princes and princesses of His Kingdom — redeemed and deeply loved.

Today (Tuesday), Mrs. Bowerman delivered the worship thought in Spanish, with her daughter Keila translating. She shared her heritage—Puerto Rican and Honduran—and highlighted cultural landmarks: El Morro in Puerto Rico and Copán in Honduras, symbolizing preservation through stone structures and carvings.

More photos on Facebook

Mrs. Bowerman connected these images to faith, urging listeners to build their lives on the unshakable rock of God rather than fleeting things. Citing Deuteronomy 6, she emphasized inscribing God’s Word on our hearts and teaching it to our children. She closed by encouraging all to build their faith, family, and heritage on Christ, our rock and fortress, ending with a heartfelt prayer of blessing.

Senior Pictures & Ads for Yearbook

Senior pictures are needed for yearbook, class night, and the class composite to be hung in the AA Commons or Library. The yearbook team will need your senior and baby pictures by Friday, October 17, 2025. We encourage you to get your senior picture done ASAP. Photographers get busy in the late summer and fall, so you may want to book an appointment early. PLEASE PLAN AHEAD and get your picture done in a timely manner.

You do not have to go to a professional photographer for this picture, but please make sure you follow the picture requirements below. If not, the yearbook team may request that you send an alternative. For yearbook pictures, seniors should be looking at the camera rather than away from it.

Pictures for the yearbook and senior ads must adhere to the following requirements:

  • In color - yearbook picture
  • Picture from waist up (not entire body) - yearbook picture
  • Portrait/vertical mode (not landscape/horizontal) - yearbook picture
  • Attire per AA guidelines—no sleeveless shirts or bare shoulders, no low cut or cropped tops, no jewelry - yearbook AND senior ads
  • High-resolution JPEG (at least 4x6, 300 ppi resolution)

Baby Photos

By the same date (October 17), please submit a baby picture as well. The baby picture will be used by yearbook as well as for senior bulletin board and class night purposes. Please submit a high-resolution JPEG baby picture. If you cannot scan the picture, you may bring the baby picture to the yearbook team, and they will scan it for you.

Also, please plan ahead for senior yearbook ad nights on Monday and Tuesday, October 27 & 28, starting at 5:00 PM. At that time, you and your parents can purchase senior ads for the yearbook (see the messages to seniors in the back of previous yearbooks for examples). Watch for more information about signing up for ad night.

Please send photos and any questions to AAyearbook@andrews.edu. Note the student’s name in the subject line and indicate if the photos are for the senior/baby section OR the parent dedication.

Attention Students: If you would like Friday's boxed lunch, those who are signed up for the lunch program must order it each week by Wednesday at 2:00 PM. The sign-up sheet will be at lunch or in the main office.

Parents: To sign your student up for the lunch program or add funds to your student's account, you may use this link to pay online (you will need your child's AU ID number), or you may pay with cash or check at the Academy main office. The minimum payment for 20 lunches is $141.20, unless your student has been approved for reduced lunch.

FACTS or Andrews Email Log In Help

New students, you should have set up your Andrews email address if you didn't already have one. Students should also have a FACTS log in.

During the school year, you will be able to find your schedule, grades, missing assignments, attendance, etc. on FACTS.

Students, if you need help logging in to FACTS or help with your Andrews email and password, please contact Mrs. Gina Meekma (ginam@andrews.edu) in the main office.

The district code is AN-MI.

School Communications

The E-Sanjo and other communications from the school, including classroom teacher communications, use the email address(es) that you (and your parents) have recorded in FACTS when you registered for Andrews Academy. We will also use students' AU email address. Some have been wondering why they are not receiving their school communications to a certain email. If you wish to have communications sent to a specific email address, please send the change to ginam@andrews.edu. Thank you!

Important Attendance Information

  • Pre-arranged Absences: Please be sure to fill out a pre-arranged absence card if you know in advance that you will be missing school due to a doctor/dentist/orthodontist appointment, trip, basketball tournament, driver's test, etc. These cards can be found in the main office or online. A parent's signature is required, then the office, and teacher(s) of the class(es) that you will miss.
  • Class Schedule Adjustment (CSA) Requests: A CSA is available for students who have a study hall at the beginning or ending of the school day or will be working during a study hall during the school day. A CSA is required for students who leave the Academy to attend classes at Andrews University, who are going to work off campus, or who wish to begin the school day later or leave earlier on a regular basis. The CSA request form must be filled out and signed by everyone indicated on the form before the student stops attending their study hall. Students must adhere to CSA guidelines that are printed on the CSA application. Any violation may cause the CSA to be revoked. We will email students and parents when a CSA is approved.

  • Other Absences: Parents, please call the main office (269-471-3138) or email aaattendance@andrews.edu if your student is going to be absent or tardy. These are the preferable methods.

Please provide the reason why your child will not be attending school and how long you think they will be out.

Parents/Guardians are the only authorized individuals who can excuse a student's attendance. When emailing, parents must send correspondence from their email account to maintain the validity of the request. Please include the name of the student.

From the Sourcebook (pg. 68):

Students who miss five (5) consecutive school days due to illness must provide written documentation from a certified medical professional corroborating the necessity of that absence.

For any attendance questions that you would like to ask by email, please direct these questions to AAattendance@andrews.edu.

Google Account Security Key Required

PLEASE note that if your child still has their security key from last year, you DO NOT NEED to purchase them a new one.

If you have not done so already, please purchase the Multi-Factor Authentication Security Key for all AA students right away. This key is essential for your child to access all Google platforms (AU email, Google Classroom, etc.), as well as secure documents from Andrews University and Andrews Academy. Each student needs their own security key, which cannot be used by anyone else.
