Winter Bible Camp 2022 - Pt. 2

Sixty-six students enjoyed Andrews Academy's annual spiritual retreat, "Winter Bible Camp," at Camp Au Sable (Jan. 20-23, 2022). Friday afternoon, time was spent enjoying the outdoors and preparing for the Agape feast and communion. Many enjoyed the sledding hill at various times throughout the weekend, hiking the nature trail, and communing with God in nature.

The foot washing, breaking of bread, and drinking of the grape juice were part of a memorable and very meaningful communion service for all on Friday evening. Throughout the weekend, there were afterglow activities. For example, on Friday evening, the females participated in an afterglow with a yarn activity. The ball of yarn was passed from one to another while affirming and appreciating each other. The girls laughed and cried as the web of yarn connecting them all was created.

Pastor Thorly James was the guest speaker for the weekend. On Saturday night, Pastor James gave each student the opportunity to make a personal commitment. After the students filled out their cards, each class pastor prayed with and for their classmates.

Saturday afternoon involved everyone hiking out to the chapel in the woods in Hartwick Pines State Park, a nearby 49-acre park of old growth pines. The rustic wooden structure provided beautiful acoustics. The spontaneous singing of hymns, gospel and many other familiar songs, interspersed with testimonials, was a highlight of Winter Bible Camp experience for many. Parents, your hearts would be filled with joy if you were able to be there and peek in the chapel doors. There was joy on everyone's faces, there was harmony all around, and it felt like we had created our own bit of Heaven.

Throughout the weekend of many activities, students worked up an appetite and enjoyed the food and company of each other. Throughout the weekend, students took turns cleaning dishes, pots and pans, cafeteria, lobby, and restrooms.  Saturday evening included outside activities, indoor games, and popcorn.

Many students (and sponsors) came back to AA changed...having a deeper relationship with Jesus and with each other. We thank the team of teachers and student pastors that planned this weekend. If you were not able to attend Winter Bible Camp this year, make sure you plan to attend next year. It’s an awesome experience in which to participate.

Chapels This Week

Our special speaker for Monday was Mr. Wallace. To begin, Mr. Wallace sang a song with us. Mr. Wallace wrote this song about grace a few years ago, from the perspective of the disciple Peter. The bridge says, "only by grace" and refers to our salvation through God's grace. When Mr. Wallace was in college, he dropped out and felt hopeless; he wanted to run away. Mr. Wallace was living with his parents, and his room hadn't been cleaned in months. One day, his father cleaned it for him. This is how God cleanses our hearts and past sins from our records. To close, Mr. Wallace gave us a challenge: try to be more grateful in life. When life seems like nothing is going right, Mr. Wallace reminded us that Jesus saved us from the darkness in our lives when He died on the cross.

Today (Tuesday), we were blessed to have Pastor Bell join us for chapel over Zoom. Pastor Bell based his talk on Nehemiah 8:10, which talks about the Lord’s joy being our strength. To explain his point, Pastor Bell gave us a bit of context. Leading up to this, the Israelites had to rebuild the wall of Jerusalem because it had been destroyed. Once the wall was complete, there was a consecration and reading of scripture. The Israelites began crying after reading the scripture because they saw God’s prediction of their current circumstances. Some would say this seems like God willed them to sin. However, God simply understood and predicted our propensities for sin. Now, going back to Nehemiah 8:10. Some would also say that our joy in the Lord is what gives us strength. Even though we tend to be self-reliant beings, God is still there to work with us. Pastor Bell encouraged us to look at this verse with a different perspective. Instead of our joy in the Lord strengthening us, we should interpret it as our ability to provide the Lord with joy, is what strengthens us.

Free Counseling Offered at Andrews University

The Andrews Community Counseling Center (ACCC) is now open for new clients. Graduate-level practicum students who provide these free counseling services at the ACCC have training in counseling adults, adolescents, and children. Counseling sessions are completely confidential.

During the pandemic, the ACCC knows that the need for mental health services is great, and they also recognize that the need for physical safety is essential. Therefore, all counseling in-person sessions will require counselors and clients to wear a face mask covering the nose and mouth at all times, regardless of vaccination status. For those unable to attend in-person, some teletherapy services may also be available using confidential Zoom sessions.
