Student Week of Prayer - Chapels

On Wednesday, chapel began with a prayer activity for the juniors and seniors. As the year comes to a close, many important decisions are being made, which can be overwhelming. This activity was to pray over any uncertainties or worries the students have about the future and place these requests in the prayer box. Following song service, Fiorella Oudri read the scripture from Romans 8:28. Junior class pastor, Eva Prouty, then delivered the devotional. She told a story about her grandmother. One day Eva’s mom was talking to her grandmother on the phone. Her grandmother seemed confused, and made a strange face before suddenly hanging up. Eva’s mother rushed to make the three hour drive, as she lived across the state, to see if she was okay. Her grandmother was diagnosed with epilepsy and had to quit her job and change her life. After losing her job, Eva’s grandmother felt worthless until she found a sense of community she didn’t have back in Detroit. It may seem like our lives are out of control sometimes, but Eva reminded us that God is always on our side. To close, Eva left us with John 16:33, which reads, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Thursday's chapel began with a song service followed by the scripture reading. Jimmy Hajaj read Psalms 46:1-2. Zothile Sibanda and Chris Mwashinga performed a piece for the special music before the speaker began. Senior class pastor, Jacob Elanko, shared the devotional. Recently, Jacob went on the music tour to Florida. The students went to the amusement park Busch Gardens. Jacob wasn't interested in going on the big rides but gave in to the pressure. This made Jacob think of Jacob from the Bible. Jacob lied and manipulated people in his life, and ended up wrestling with God. Even though he ended up with a broken hip, Jacob won this fight with God because he didn't give up. Jacob's broken hip was his consequence, but it was also a reminder of God's power. Jacob reminded us that sometimes we need to close our eyes, breathe, and just accept God's blessing for us.

To close our week of prayer Student Association pastor, Benny Santos, delivered the message today (Friday). Benny's presentation was titled It is Your Fault. Benny remembers wanting to make a cake with his older brother when they were younger. Benny needed to stand on his brother's back to reach the ingredients, but his brother wasn't aware. He bent down to pick up his glasses, Benny stepped on his back, and they both lost their balance, causing Benny to grab onto the cabinet. The cabinet and its contents came crashing down, and his brother was cut by broken glass. Benny felt guilty because it was his fault his brother was hurt.

Benny also shared a story about their dog, Molly. Molly was a great dog until she suddenly became hostile. One day Benny looked into her eyes and asked why she was being mean when he loved her so much. This is how God feels when we continue to reject Him. When dealing with guilt, we try to hide it, blame others, or punish ourselves. Benny encouraged us to recognize and confess our sins, ask for forgiveness and acceptance, and forgive ourselves. There is nothing we can do to make God love us less. God's forgiveness is instantaneous, complete, and gratuitous.

To close, Benny challenged us to accept God's forgiveness and stop feeling guilty and concluded with an Andrews Academy family prayer together at the the foot of the cross.

Woodworking Class

Woodworking class, led by Mr. Ron Norton, is currently working on two different projects. One group is working on building dog houses; this week they were creating plans as they design their construction project. The other half of the class is working on building two new doors for the outdoor school storage trailers behind the shop. They were working on the headers for the two doors. The storage shed is nine feet tall, and the doors are eight feet; thus the need for headers for both storage trailers.

Latin American Culture Class

Latin American Culture class students have been working on another hands-on project, this time focusing on Guatemala. ”Giant Kite Festival" is a cultural event where people take part in a giant kite contest. Entrants have typically spent months creating their kites, and participating kites are graded on both creativity and length of flight. This contest has been around for several centuries and is now recognized as a Cultural Good of Guatemala. These kites usually display issues people care about. Students of this class were making their kites with themes such as “don’t pollute," “pray for Ukraine,” “religious liberty,” etc. Thank you, Mrs. Silvestre, for leading out in this project as your students learn more about Latin America.
