Fiddler on the Roof - The Musical
A fine Andrews Academy tradition is the school play or musical by the “Literary Interpretation” class, which just presented three outstanding performances of Fiddler on the Roof, (December 3, 4, and 5).
Fiddler on the Roof is a musical set in the Pale of Settlement of Imperial Russia in or around 1905. It is based on "Tevye and His Daughters" (or "Tevye the Dairyman") and other tales by Sholem Aleichem. The story centers on Tevye, a milkman in the village of Anatevka, who attempts to maintain his Jewish religious and cultural traditions as outside influences encroach upon his family's lives. He must cope with the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters who wish to marry for love; their choices of husbands are successively less palatable for Tevye. An edict of the tsar eventually evicts the Jews from their village.
All three performances were either sold out or very close to being sold out. Many in the audience commented on what an amazing production it was. I overheard one exclaim to their friend, “It’s amazing that high school students can do this so well!”
Over the years of producing plays at Andrews Academy, we have noticed that students enrolled in the class have surprised themselves by what they can do, and they have gained a new confidence in their abilities. Additionally, it is what happens in the process of preparing for the musical that is most important—students learning to work together toward one goal, keeping at it until it is "right" and not just putting in practice time, realizing each one is important to the success of the project, and creating strong bonds and a sense of "belonging" and group accountability. Those intangibles help students grow in positive and memorable ways.
Thank you, Mr. David VanDenburgh and Mr. Marcelo Martins, for investing so many hours and so much energy into the production of this musical. They, with the help of the students, parents, and numerous volunteers, built the set, prepared costuming and makeup, trained voices, and tended to the numerous details that made this production possible. Special thanks to Mrs. Carrie VanDenburgh for conducting, Philip Roberts (AA class of 2002), for providing sound and lighting tech, and Darrin Kurtz for assisting.
A big thank you and bravo to each of the actors for their outstanding performance. And a big thank you to the orchestra members for their fabulous performance and their many hours of extra evening practices to make this musical possible.

This is a reminder to bring in your food for the food drive! We are collecting until this Friday, December 9, so stop by the store, and bring in what you can! We want to give as much as possible. Last year we made 150 boxes of food. Our goal this year is to make 200 boxes. Let's make that happen together! Bring your food items to the wall in front of the gym. Let's give back to our community! Andrews Academy Christmas Concerts
|
|
Join us this Friday night at 7:00 PM at Pioneer Memorial Church and be inspired by a program of music, Scripture readings and drama honoring the King of Kings. Feast of Lights—now in its 49th year—is the Christmas musical gift from Andrews Academy to the Berrien Springs community and beyond. It is an evening of instrumental music, bells, choral and congregational singing, lights, and a Nativity scene.
Experience with us the joyful retelling of the Christmas story, beginning with the humble incarnation of the long-expected Messiah and culminating with the Lord of Lords receiving "the kingdoms of this world" and our universal expression of praise: "Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth ... and He shall reign for ever and ever (Revelation 19:6, 11:15)."

Final exams/assessments start next Wednesday, December 14. Please note when your exams are scheduled for and carefully prepare for them so that you can do well in each of your classes. The first day begins at 9:25 AM to provide you more time to prepare. If your transportation requires you to arrive at the school at 8:00 AM, then please go to the Commons.
Students are required to attend even if you do not have an exam/assessment for that time slot. However, if you have a study hall (or band) during the first exam slot of the day, then you do not need to arrive until devotions. For students with band or a study hall for the first or last exam slot of the day, parents should contact us at AAattendance@andrews.edu or 269-471-3138 to excuse study hall/band. Contact Mrs. Meekma in the front office if you have any questions. Be sure to sign in at the front office if you arrive late or leave early.
Students with a college class exam time that conflicts with AA classes or exams, please contact your teachers to make other arrangements. Also let the office know so that you can be excused.
If you have a break in between two finals (for example, on Thursday you have a 10:15 AM class final and no 11:10 AM class final [such as a study hall or CSA], then a 2:25 PM class final), then you must go to study hall. You may not leave campus and walk over to Apple Valley or anywhere else.
Please remember that students must stay in the classroom for the entire exam class period. You may not go "get books," "get a drink," etc. when you are done with your exam.
Before the exam begins, please get books you may need to study from, get a drink, use the restroom, etc. so that you can stay in the classroom the entire time. We want the entire school to be quiet during exams so that they can be done as effectively as possible without distractions. Thank you!

The Fitness Center is typically open and available on Mondays from 3:30-4:30 PM. The challenge has been that no one has accepted the opportunity to work out. Please, take the time and opportunity now that it is cold to enjoy what is available to every student at AA by using the Fitness Center on Mondays. The link to sign up so we can prepare ahead of time is below, but it is not necessary.

The Women's Strength Club is still going strong, and I would really like to thank Mrs. Case for providing her expertise and experience in coaching and training the females of AA. This opportunity is still available for those that would like to join on Thursdays from 3:30-4:30 PM in the Fitness Center. Again, you can sign up on the form below, or just show up ready to receive coaching from a certified Personal Trainer.
