AA Joins Area Adventist Elementary Schools for SAU Mini-Concert

Today (November 15), Andrews Academy students walked over the the Howard Performing Arts Center, joining Ruth Murdoch and Village Elementary School students, as well as others for a concert. Southern Adventist University's orchestra is on campus to present a concert with AU's orchestra tomorrow (Saturday) night. SAU presented a short concert this morning for our schools. The music was beautiful and an educational experience, as the conductor told the story behind each of the songs they presented.

AA Fall Play - Radium Girls

Step back to the 1920s—a time of glittering progress

darkened by hidden dangers.

This gripping true story follows young female factory workers who paint watch dials with a luminous, radium-infused paint, believing it to be safe, even magical. As they fall mysteriously ill, they discover the shocking truth: their beloved radium, hailed as a miracle cure-all, is slowly poisoning them.

Refusing to fade quietly, these courageous "Radium Girls" take on a powerful corporation, battling for justice and their lives. With each defiant step, they expose the cost of corporate greed and the importance of workers' rights.

Full of heart, tragedy, and resilience, Radium Girls reminds us of the power of ordinary people to ignite change.

Prepare to be moved by this intense and illuminating drama that sheds light on one of history's most haunting injustices.

Approximate run time: 120 mins. Interest level: ages 11+.

Purchase tickets online with a credit card, or stop by the Academy main office to purchase tickets via cash or check. Tickets may also be available at the door the night of the show.

Chapel Recap: North American Countries Highlighted

At various times during the year, we have a special emphasis for a week of chapels. This week North American countries were highlighted. Each morning, there were trivia questions about various aspects of these countries. Guest speakers shared some heritage of their country as they also shared spiritual insights from Genesis 42-50.

On Monday, Mr. Rick Wright, AA math and physics teacher, presented a parallel study of the famine that hit Egypt and Ireland’s potato famine. As we know, Joseph saved food during the seven years of plenty to provide food for the seven years of famine. During this famine, many people had to migrate to find food. Similarly, about a million Irish died of famine, and about a million migrated many to America. Mr. Wright shared some of his American heritage, with some ancestors going back to the Irish migration to America. It was an interesting presentation as he presented a parallel story of Egypt and Ireland’s famine.

On Tuesday, Mr. Atkins, AA science teacher, shared Joseph’s story of forgiving his brothers and how God put all the experiences into Joseph’s life so he could lead the country and save lives of thousands of people during seven years of famine. Mr. Atkins shared a little about Canada and his experiences of working at an Adventist camp in Ontario. When in Academy, Mr. Atkins asked God to let him know what career he should pursue. God answered his prayer by giving him life experiences while working at this youth camp that helped him prepare to be a teacher and helped him realize he should be a teacher. He encouraged current students to ask Jesus to direct them in their careers so as they reflect upon their lives in the future, they can see how God led in making their life choices.

On Wednesday, Pastor Gabriel Johnson, AA Bible teacher, shared a story that his good friend from college shared with him. His friend, a Native American from Alaska, told the story of an Alaskan Native American in the early 1800s who, while in nature, heard a bird say, “father and son” and other phrases. He experienced peace and at one point was told to work six days and rest the seventh. He also heard about boats without oars, and boats that could fly (airplanes) and other things that would enter into Alaska, and that there would be hardship for his people. Another thing he heard was that God (referred to as Grandfather) will return to his people, but his people would go through a difficult time. Pastor Johnson shared that God will prepare us for the transitions in our lives like he did for Joseph from the Bible.

On Thursday, students watched two portions of the Torah Bible video series. It was a summary of the two portions of the book of Genesis. The first half was about the creation of the Earth and the fall, and how people always turned to sinful ways. The second half of the story is the redemption of our fallen state by following the life of Abraham and his descendants, and the lessons they learned, all helping us experience God’s redemption. After each video, Mrs. May had students point out things they failed to mention in the video and to point out a few errors. It was a good interactive chapel to help us think deeply.

Today (Friday), Mr. Jairo Diaz from AU presented on the last chapter of Genesis, chapter 50. It was about the passing of Jacob and then Joseph. He pointed out that Joseph was reflecting on the past and then looking into the future. We should likewise reflect on the blessings of our past as we look into the future. He divided the students into small groups to share their blessings with each other. At the end, he had a couple of students share their blessings to the entire group.

Important Attendance Information

  • Pre-arranged Absences: Please be sure to fill out a pre-arranged absence card if you know in advance that you will be missing school due to a doctor/dentist/orthodontist appointment, trip, basketball tournament, driver's test, etc. These cards can be found in the main office or online. A parent's signature is required, then the office, and teacher(s) of the class(es) that you will miss.
  • Class Schedule Adjustment (CSA) Requests: A CSA is available for students who have a study hall at the beginning or ending of the school day or will be working during a study hall during the school day. A CSA is required for students who leave the Academy to attend classes at Andrews University, who are going to work off campus, or who wish to begin the school day later or leave earlier on a regular basis. The CSA request form must be filled out and signed by everyone indicated on the form before the student stops attending their study hall. Students must adhere to CSA guidelines that are printed on the CSA application. Any violation may cause the CSA to be revoked. I will email students and parents when a CSA is approved.

Please provide the reason why your child will not be attending school and how long you think they will be out.

Parents/Guardians are the only authorized individuals who can excuse a student's attendance. When emailing, parents must send correspondence from their email account to maintain the validity of the request. Please include the name of the student.

From the Sourcebook (pg. 83):

Students who miss three (3) consecutive school days due to illness must provide written documentation from a certified medical professional corroborating the necessity of that absence.
