Black History Assembly

A special celebration assembly on Friday, February 27, 2026, concluded Black History Week. The program featured special music, a dramatic reading of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, and presentations highlighting inventions created by Black inventors.

Dr. Hyveth Williams delivered a presentation in the middle of the program. She is the first Black female pastor and the first female senior pastor in the Seventh-day Adventist Church. In 2009, she became a professor of Homiletics at the Andrews University Theological Seminary. Her message, titled “Seeing Beyond the Majority,” emphasized that truth is not determined by popular opinion. Referencing 1 Samuel 16:7, she reminded the audience that while people look at outward appearances, the Lord looks at the heart. She shared numerous biblical examples in which a minority—or even a single individual—stood courageously for what was right.

Dr. Williams also recounted stories of Adventist women who stood against the majority and helped shape a more equitable society. She encouraged listeners to remember three key principles:

  1. Values – Decide what you believe before facing pressure.

  2. Valor – Act with courage when others hesitate, trusting in God.

  3. Vision – Look beyond what is visible to see what God sees.

She concluded by urging students to see beyond the majority and allow God—not the crowd—to determine their destiny.

Thank you to Pastor Gabriel Johnson and the many students who organized this informative and powerful week of programs, culminating in this meaningful celebration assembly. We also extend our appreciation to all the participants, not only for today’s program, but for their contributions throughout the week.

Silhouettes Get Perfect Score at Vocal Festival

The Andrews Academy Silhouettes were privileged to be able to participate in the Michigan School Vocal Music Association District Festival on February 25, 2026.
At the festival, the Silhouettes performed “If Ye Love Me” by Thomas Tallis, and “Chariots” by Péter Louis van Dijk, before a panel of judges where they were scored on a rubric. Following the performance and a workshop with one of the judges, the group was given a page of music to sight-read. Their sight-reading attempts were also scored by a judge.

Andrews Academy is pleased to announce that the Silhouettes not only received a Division 1 ranking, but also a perfect score in all categories! This ranking allows the Silhouettes to participate in the State Festival in May. We thank God for how He has blessed the hard work and dedication of our students, under the guidance of Mr. Daniel Cerna, as they seek to honor Him through excellence in singing.

Hearing the News

This Tuesday, March 3, is our scheduled Academy Day, when area 8th graders will visit AA. This will be an E-Learning Day for most AA students.

Class officers, organizational officers, and a few other students will be helping as tour guides and volunteering for the day, and some music students will be needed for chapel at 8:00 AM, but most AA students will work on assignments at home that day. Please let us know if you need more details regarding this event.

REMINDER: Cell Phone/Smart Watch Policy

To maintain a safe, effective teaching and learning environment for students, teachers, staff, and the community, Andrews Academy maintains a strict electronic devices policy.

Any violation of this policy or otherwise inappropriate use of electronic devices in text messaging, recording, loudspeakers, or electronic photo capabilities will lead to immediate confiscation, and may lead to further disciplinary action. Students should arrange with the office to pick up their confiscated device(s).

Exceptions to this policy will only be made based on medical necessities or other special needs that are recognized by school officials and/or officially documented by appropriate professionals.

Cell Phones & Smart Watches:
Cell phones and smart watches should be kept in a safe place—such as a locker (devices should be neither seen nor heard)—and are not to be used during the school day or during on-campus school activities during school hours. Students may use their cell phones during school hours only under the following limited circumstances:

  1. Students may check their cell phones for important messages at their lockers 5 minutes before their lunch period ends. Phone should then be redeposited in a safe storage area after checking messages.

  2. With the express permission of a school teacher or administrator. Students may come to the main office to use their phone with permission.

Inappropriate Use of Electronic Devices:
Students are not allowed to record any person, including students or teachers/staff, without the express permission of the person whose picture is being taken during the school day. Photos and video recordings are prohibited in locker rooms and bathrooms.

Trips and Tours:
Electronic devices may be used for trips or tour events in which cell phone/electronic device use is deemed appropriate by the sponsor.

REMINDER: Backpack Policy/Lockers

Students should store their backpack in their locker. They should only take their books and materials to class. Backpacks are not permitted in the classrooms, library, or the hallways outside of the classrooms.

Loose backpacks on the floor or in the hallways create hazards to the safe egress from the classroom or the hallways and impede exit routes in the case of a fire or tornado evacuation.

Students may use whatever backpack they choose to carry their books and materials to and from school; however, these backpacks should safely fit in their Academy locker and be kept there. We recommend that students who need to transport a computer or tablet acquire a small protective sleeve.

More Policy Reminders

The following are not allowed in the school without express permission, per the Sourcebook:

  • Headphones and earbuds are not permitted to be used in the building. (pg. 63)

  • All head coverings, hats, hoodies, and jackets with a hood are not permitted to be worn inside the school building. (pg. 65)

AA will be closed during Spring Break

(except by appointment).

Important Dates from the Registrar’s Office:

  • Tuesday, March 31 – Work Experience Forms Due (Seniors)

  • Tuesday, March 31 -10:15 AM Academic Orientation Assembly for 2026-27 (9-11th Graders) / Senior Class Meeting

Textbooks

Andrews Academy has established a textbook program that provides students with the necessary textbooks and digital content for their classes. Students are able to buy their required textbooks, workbooks, and digital content through the school as needed during the school year and then sell their textbooks back at the end of the semester/school year, provided that the book will be used again.

Textbooks for second semester are available in the main office. Please stop by ASAP to buy any that you still need, bringing payment with you (cash/check/credit card). If you would like to know the cost ahead of time, please email ginam@andrews.edu.

We are also buying back textbooks that students no longer need, especially for classes that will be taught again second semester.

Note: Some classes require digital content which will be paid for at the same time as the textbooks. The digital code will be provided to the student by Andrews Academy and is not returnable. It may not be transferable if the student drops the class.

Opting into Texting for One Call Now

Andrews Academy utilizes One Call Now, an automated messaging service, to contact students and parents about school cancellations, upcoming events, and performances, etc. Hopefully you received the recent messages from us regarding E-Learning Days.

Please make sure that we have the phone number that you would like to have contacted. For school closings due to weather, we also send an email, put the announcement on our Facebook and Instagram pages, and alert local TV stations (WSBT, WNDU).

To receive a text notification instead of a call (text works best), please text “ALERT” to 22300. Please make sure that you have given us the number that you would like to be texted on as well. Email ginam@andrews.edu with any changes. Thank you!

Tuition

Payment #7 of 10 was due on February 25. You may put your payment in the drop box on the post by the main doors if needed.

Please contact Ms. Gracie at gaytan@andrews.edu with questions.

Ice Skating & Class Vespers

Andrews Academy students enjoyed ice skating at the Howard rink in Saint Joseph, Michigan. About 70 students participated in the event, which was a great way to spend Friday afternoon, following a week of classes. (February 20, 2026)

After ice skating, each class held its own vespers. The juniors met at the Suarez home, where the Elanko family prepared an Indian dinner. After the class sang together, Mr. Suarez shared a devotion from Exodus 4:1–2, reminding students how God used Moses’ simple staff to display His power. He compared this to a TikTok creator who turns a bag of chips into a gourmet meal, asking, “What is in your bag of talent?” Just as the chef transforms simple ingredients, God can use each student’s gifts for something extraordinary. As juniors look toward senior year and life beyond high school, they were encouraged to place their talents in God’s hands and trust Him to shape their future.

Chapel Recap - Black History Week

Each day of chapel this week began with interactive questions about Black history.

Song service began the first day of Black History Week (Tuesday due to a weather/E-Learning Day on Monday). Dafne Amador Carballo, an AA senior, then shared part of her family history during chapel. She spoke about her strong Afro-Caribbean roots and her upbringing in Cuba, explaining how music and creativity are beautifully expressed through her rich African heritage. She also reflected on the diversity within her extended family, noting the many different shades of Black. As a light-skinned Cuban of African descent, she shared that she did not always feel fully accepted within the Black community and at times questioned her identity as an Afro-Caribbean woman. However, she emphasized that Blackness is not defined by a single shade. She expressed that her Blackness lives within the many African-Caribbean layers of who she is and shared her story to honor and recognize her heritage.

Thank you, Dafne, for sharing from your heart and personal experiences with us this morning. Pastor Gabriel Johnson closed the service in prayer, encouraging us to remain unified in Christ.

On Wednesday, Briauna Skinner, accompanied by Gabriel Maxwell on piano, presented a beautiful violin-piano duet. Both students are juniors at AA. Pastor Yannick Martin shared a story from his high school years in Jamaica, when his uncle promised him a financial reward for strong exam results. Although he initially received only part of what was promised, he chose gratitude over resentment—later, his uncle paid his full college tuition. Using this story, Pastor Martin encouraged students to persevere in their studies and in their faith. He shared how God gradually drew him to Christ, especially during his senior year of college through fasting and a vivid dream that deeply impacted him. Reflecting on Romans 5:3–6, he reminded students that perseverance builds character and hope, urging them to pursue not only academic success but a personal relationship with Jesus.

On Thursday after Shema Gaparayi, an AA senior, performed special music, Pastor Gabriel Johnson, an AA religion teacher, read Psalm 61:5 and shared the story of a Black mother who went into labor during a severe Detroit snowstorm decades ago. Unable to reach her home, paramedics pulled her by sled to an ambulance. Though not a Christian, she later recalled hearing a voice tell her to “look up,” and seeing the stars reminded her of Jesus’ birth. She wondered, “Is there a star for my child?” Initially refused admission at a nearby hospital, she was eventually admitted after paramedics insisted it was too dangerous to travel farther. A tall African-American doctor safely delivered her baby. Years later, when she returned to thank him, hospital staff claimed no doctor by that name had ever worked there. Was he the "star" for her child? Her spiritual journey grew after a persistent Adventist Bible worker continued visiting her. She was eventually baptized and later moved to Berrien Springs to raise her son. Pastor Johnson then revealed he was the baby born that night, reminding students that even when we aren’t seeking God, He is seeking us and calling us His own.

Passion Play

Sabbath, April 4, 2026

The Passion Play is an indoor/outdoor immersive walk-through experience on the Andrews University campus, featuring eight scenes that portray the final days of Jesus’ life—from the bustling marketplace, to the Last Supper, Gethsemane, Pilate's Judgment Hall, Crucifixion, and Resurrection. Hundreds of guests move with the story as it unfolds around them, surrounded by actors, sounds, and live settings. Open to everyone, the Passion Play invites people of all ages to witness the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus in a powerful, interactive way.

If you live in the Berrien Springs area, we invite you to be part of the story—whether by acting, volunteering behind the scenes, or inviting friends and family to join in sharing the message of Jesus with our community.

We are looking for extras for the mob, Roman soldiers, volunteers for the marketplace scene, greeters/ushers, and a team to help with restrooms.

Scan the QR code or click the button below to volunteer and reserve your free tickets (required)!

Important Attendance Policy Updates

ATTENDANCE EVALUATION

Each student begins each semester with an attendance record of zero points. All absences and tardies (excused and unexcused) are assigned a weight of 1 point. The FACTS system includes separate attendance codes, allowing for clear categorization and reporting:

  • A (Absence)

  • AE (Excused Absence)

  • T (Tardy)

  • TE (Excused Tardy)

The AS attendance code is assigned a weight of 0 and is used to mark school-related absences (e.g., for approved school trips or activities). These absences do not count against the student’s attendance record.

Students are allowed one long tour per semester.

PROCEDURES

Each school day, the student who was absent or tardy without excuse is notified of the record in FACTS, the student information system. Parents and students both receive email notifications. If the student believes the record to be incorrect, or has any question about the record, it is that student’s responsibility to contact the school office or attendance officer or submit to the school office a written excuse from a parent/guardian within 3 school days to remove those points.

Correction received after five days generally will not be accepted. In instances where a student is absent for several consecutive days, such as for an extended illness, two school days are allotted following the last absence to submit an excuse.

A student is responsible for all course work missed while absent with or without excuse.

Absence Policy
After 5 unexcused absences per class: Student receives a warning email.
After 8 unexcused absences per class: Student receives a demerit.
After 10 unexcused absences per class: A meeting is scheduled with the student, parents, and attendance officer or another administrator.
After 10 combined excused and unexcused absences per class: Student receives a warning email noting the risk of withdrawal from the class.
After 15 combined excused and unexcused absences per class: A meeting with the registrar is required, and the student may be withdrawn from the class and lose all credit subject to that class, pending a review by the Student Affairs Committee.

Tardy Policy
After 5 unexcused tardies per class: Student receives a warning email.
After 10 unexcused tardies per class: Student receives a demerit.
After 10 total excused and unexcused tardies per class: Student meets with the attendance officer or administrator.

Demerit Review Policy
Demerits related to attendance may be re-evaluated at the end of the semester if the student maintains no unexcused absences or tardies from the date the demerit was issued onward.

A student is eligible to hold an organizational office or leadership position as long as they maintain an attendance score below 7 unexcused absences. A student is also eligible to participate in co-curricular, overnight trips and tours if the attendance score is below 7 unexcused absences. A student is placed on citizenship probation when the attendance score reaches 7 unexcused absences.

Major off-campus school activities include, but are not limited to, overnight trips and tours (see section on Student Citizenship-Citizenship Probation). When a student’s attendance score reaches 7 unexcused absences, the student is placed on citizenship probation. Further unexcused absences could lead to future in-school suspensions. Repeated attendance issues will be referred to the Student Affairs Committee to determine if the student should continue in the Academy and, if so, under what conditions. If these conditions are not successfully adhered to, the student’s enrollment may be discontinued at the time of infractions, at the end of a given semester, or at the end of the school year.

Students who miss five (5) consecutive school days due to illness must provide written documentation from a certified medical professional corroborating the necessity of that absence.

More Attendance Information

  • Pre-arranged Absences: Please be sure to fill out a pre-arranged absence card if you know in advance that you will be missing school due to a doctor/dentist/orthodontist appointment, trip, basketball tournament, driver's test, etc. These cards can be found in the main office or online. A parent's signature is required, then the office, and teacher(s) of the class(es) that you will miss.

  • Class Schedule Adjustment (CSA) Requests: A CSA is available for students who have a study hall at the beginning or ending of the school day or will be working during a study hall during the school day. A CSA is required for students who leave the Academy to attend classes at Andrews University, who are going to work off campus, or who wish to begin the school day later or leave earlier on a regular basis. The CSA request form must be filled out and signed by everyone indicated on the form before the student stops attending their study hall.
