Andrews Academy's

Official Newsletter

November 23, 2021

Dear Andrews Academy Students and Families:

As we continue to journey through uncharted territories of the COVID-19 pandemic together, I want you to know that I care about you, our students, our families, and our community. I understand you may be feeling a bit overwhelmed by all that is happening in our world and community. The coronavirus pandemic has forced teachers, students, and parents into an education experience in which they must navigate changing schedules, new methods of keeping students engaged, and confronting the challenges of COVID-19.

Since the start of November, we have had four (4) students test positive for COVID-19, and many students have had to be quarantined. There is no evidence of any transmission in our building.

Due to the rapidly changing environment surrounding the COVID-19, Andrews Academy will transition to remote learning starting tomorrow, Wednesday, November 24, 2021. This is one of the methods we will implement to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 incidents.

By temporally transitioning to remote learning, we increase our chances of continuing in-person learning for the rest of the semester.

The schedule is as follows:

  • Tomorrow, Wednesday, November 24, asynchronous learning - half day (no Quirky Turkey). Watch for assignments from MORNING teachers.

The week after Thanksgiving gives our school committee time to assess what is happening and allows us to determine the best course of action for our school.

  • Monday, November 29, asynchronous learning day – Watch for assignments from teachers.
  • Tuesday, November 30, synchronous learning day – Zoom with teachers at class time. Juniors only assembly — 10:15 AM via Zoom.
  • Wednesday, December 1, synchronous learning day – Zoom with teachers at class time. There will be chapel at 8:55 AM via Zoom.
  • Thursday, December 2, asynchronous learning day – Watch for assignments from teachers.
  • Friday, December 3, synchronous learning day – Zoom with teachers at class time.

If students need any items from AA such as textbooks, musical instruments, etc., please email academy@andrews.edu to arrange to pick up items.

Students, watch your email and Google Classroom for information regarding Zoom classes and assignments. Please review our calendar for updates in school activities.

Please see the attached Student Expectations for Remote Learning for further information. This important document can also be found in FACTS under "Resource Documents."

Thank you for your continued support as we work in partnership to keep our school and community safe.

Blessings,

Pastor Mario Ferguson

Thanksgiving at AA

God has truly blessed this school year (2021-2022). As we are soon to enjoy the Thanksgiving holidays, lets thank Jesus for the many blessings the Andrews Academy family has received. Please continue to pray for the school, that His Spirit will lead throughout the remainder of the school year.

Andrews Academy has a number of Thanksgiving traditions. On Monday (yesterday), we had our Thanksgiving notes assembly. This assembly involves writing letters of thanks to people who have impacted our lives. The Student Association and volunteers then deliver these letters to the mailboxes in students lockers so that everyone is greeted with letters of thanks on Tuesday afternoon.

A second tradition is to have an AA family breakfast on Wednesday morning prior to the Thanksgiving break. A relatively new component of AA’s Thanksgiving celebration is “Quirky Turkey” which began in 2014. The Student Association developed a series of fun games in which each class was going to compete against each other. However, with the rise of COVID-19 cases in our community, it was decided to begin online instruction for a little while to be cautious. These festive events had to be cancelled. Thank, SA officers, for creating these games and for leading out in the Thanksgiving notes that was able to happen.

Have a blessed Thanksgiving holiday!

Latin America Culture Class

Recently, Latin American Culture Class has been learning about Colombia. The students have been painting their own Botero imitation. Fernando Botero Angulo (born April 19, 1932) is a Colombian figurative artist and sculptor, born in Medellín. His signature style, also known as "Boterismo," depicts people and figures in large, exaggerated volume, which can represent political criticism or humor, depending on the piece. He is considered the most recognized and quoted living artist from Latin America, and his art can be found in highly visible places around the world, such as Park Avenue in New York City and the Champs-Élysées in Paris.

The students' artwork is amazing! They worked diligently as they painted and learned more about Colombia culture. Thank you to Mrs. Marah Silvestre, Latin American Culture class teacher, for planning this creative exercise in learning about Colombia Latin American Culture.

Chapels This Week

On Monday, Mrs. Mills presented for chapel. To start, she began talking about the armor of God from Ephesians 6:10. She then showed us a video of motivational speaker Priscilla Shirer. Priscilla told a story of going to a trunk-or-treat with her son. They were waiting in line at the most popular stop, a truck bed whack-a-mole, when another little boy started causing a fuss. He ended up ripping the sheet off of the table, revealing the adults hiding and controlling the puppets. From this seemingly insignificant incident, we can learn that there is always something we cannot see, just as there are attacks from the devil that we cannot expect. Priscilla takes her boys fishing occasionally. When they go, she has to flip over the boat into the water. She knows that there is always a critter under the boat because of the cool, damp environment. Likewise, if the environment we create around ourselves is upside down and backward, like the boat, there is already an invitation for the devil to attack us. Priscilla believes that there is a seventh piece of armor that we should all equip ourselves with: prayer. To close, she called all those listening to pray fervently to God, to trust Him, and always be aware of when the devil might try and attack you next.

Our guest speaker for Tuesday was Chaplain José Bourget and his daughter, Abigail Rose. Abigail was the star of her father's message today. Pastor Bourget remembers having to wait while his wife was in labor and, even as a glass-half-full kind of person, says it was one of the most worrying moments of his life. One of his first memories of Abigail is when she had a lemon for the first time. Abigail began sucking on it and made an ugly face from the sourness, but she was still beautiful.

During quarantine, Pastor Bourget grew out his beard. He tickled Abigail with it, and she burst out laughing. Most recently, Abigail finally took her first steps at her great-grandmother's house. All of these moments make those around Abigail happy. Why? Simply because she is being herself. To close, Pastor Bourget reminded us that God made us all unique for a reason. He wanted you to be different. So: Just. Be. You.
