Alumni Weekend - Convocation and Career Seminars
Friday, October 20, 2023, was the beginning of Andrews Academy’s alumni weekend, when hundreds of alumni return to remember the fun times at AA and renew friendships with each other and with our God.
The weekend started with Convocation in the chapel for the current Academy students. The Senior class of 2024 led in the school song and the pledge of allegiance. Pastor Mario Ferguson, AA Principal, welcomed everyone to Convocation. Pastor Don Anderson, AA class of 1983, presented the address. He is a pastor in British Columbia, Canada, and is also a Snap on Tools salesperson. His talk was entitled, “Restoring the Image of God," based on the quote on the theme wall of the Commons.
After Convocation, the students went to various classrooms to participate in Career Seminars. Based on their interests, students were able to attend two career presentations of their choice. It’s a great opportunity for students to explore possible career choices as Andrews Academy alumni shared insights about their careers. For example, Sara Vulicevic (’03) presented on healthcare leadership, while Warren Johns (’63) presented on library sciences.
This is the fourth year of also having a Career Fair as part of the events of the day, coordinated by Ms. Nieves. The gymnasium had a number of booths helping explain more about various careers, many including interactive activities. Booths were represented by various departments from AU, the community, and alumni. Thank you all for making this a successful opportunity for students to learn more about careers.
Please go out of your way to thank Mrs. Tonya Snyder, our alumni liaison, and Mrs. Gina Meekma for an excellent program and for their part in planning the entire weekend. And thank you to a whole host of volunteers for stepping in and helping make this weekend possible.

Alumni Weekend - Vespers
On Friday night of Alumni Weekend, vespers was presented by Andrews Academy class of 2003. It was a great time of singing the familiar songs from twenty years ago. One of the classmates shared a testimony from when she was here at Andrews Academy.
Thank you, AA Class of 2003, for presenting the Friday evening vespers.
Members of various classes stayed after the program for a couple of hours catching up on what has happened in their lives and that of their classmates. Some gathered around the campfire by the new benches given by the class of 2023. As they stood around the fire and talked, they also enjoyed some s'mores. It was a fun evening of sharing and remembering time together at AA.

Alumni Weekend - Sabbath School and Church
Alumni Sabbath School began at 10 AM on Sabbath morning (October 21, 2023) in the chapel. It was an inspirational presentation of tributes along with special music by AA students. Through their tributes, presenters shared how Jesus used the faculty and experiences of Andrews Academy to change their lives.
Alumni proceedings were also interspersed throughout the Sabbath School program. Honor classes were recognized by having each class stand. In some cases, the honored classes were asked to come to the front of the chapel to be recognized. For example, the class of 1973, celebrating their 50-year reunion, were presented gifts. Clemen & Bradley Sheppard were honored with a teacher legacy award. Mr. Leroy Patterson (‘58) was honored as alumnus of the year.
Mrs. Pellegrini, Pastor Kardos-Moldovan ("Ms. May"), Pastor Johnson, and a number of Andrews Academy students led in children’s church. After singing, the leaders told a Bible story. The children worked on a craft project, making the armor of God. Squeals of delight could be heard from the children as they not only learned the story but also experienced the story, walking away with their own armor of God! A big thank you to the many students who helped with children’s church.
While the children were in the library, the worship service occurred in the Academy chapel. The sermon was presented by Doug Taylor and two other classmates from the class of 1998, a powerful trio sermon entitled, “I have Called You by Name.” Numerous alumni from the class of 1998 participated with scripture, prayer, and special music. The current Silhouettes invited alumni to join them in singing “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.” It was great to see a number of families with two generations of alumni singing together.
Following worship service, a haystack meal was provided for the attendees. We thank Pastor Ferguson, PPI, organization officers, and many other volunteers for organizing the meal. It was another good opportunity for classmates to reunite and share what has happened in their lives since graduation and remember experiences from Academy years. Many shared how much of a positive impact Andrews Academy had on their lives. During lunch, each of the honored classes had their photo taken and ate in a classroom together so they could fellowship together.

Alumni Weekend - Shydepoke
The traditional Shydepoke game this year was a basketball game held in the AU gymnasium (October 21, 2023). Since Shydepoke’s inception in 1960, it had been a flag football game. It was not a feasible option to use the new high school football field this year where it was traditionally held, the University’s field is being transformed into a soccer field, and the Academy field does not have lighting. So this year it was decided to have basketball games. There was a lot of excitement during the games that had many more players and a larger audience compared to recent years. It also turned out to be a rather cool and wet evening, so many were thankful to be indoors.
The female alumni and the female AA students' game was won by the alumni 37 to 28. It was a tied game at the end of the first period, then alumni took a lead and won the game. The male alumni and the male AA students had the alumni taking an early lead, tying it up near the end of the third period. The school then took a small lead at the end of the third period. The alumni team then took a decided lead in the fourth period winning the game to 57 to 42. Everyone had a lot of fun.
The Doug Newberry most valuable player award went to Braden Keyes, and the Lydia Chong most valuable player award went to Lora Baker. These awards are named after two PE teachers from the 1980s.
Some Shydepoke history: In 1960, the Andrews Academy Shydepoke tradition began during the principalship of Knobby Mauro. At that point, there was only one game for the males. In the 1980s, the female and then male games became a tradition. The name “Shydpoke” was chosen, a term from the south meaning a “get together social event.” Also during the Mauro's principalship, a challenge was presented to the students to come up with a name for the school teams. Gordon Johns, from the class of 1966, came up with the name “Acumen.” His goal was to scan the dictionary for a unique and meaningful name and only go to the “ac” of the dictionary when he came up with this name. The acumen name means “the ability to make good judgments and quick decisions, typically in a particular domain.” He won the $10 prize for this.

We encourage students to attend these conferences with their parent.
Please note that only full-time teachers are listed. Music, contract, and college/dual enrollment class teachers aren't listed. If you have a desire to conference with a music or contract teacher, the office will be able to provide you with contact information. College teachers must be reached through the University.
If spots are filled or there is not a time slot that is workable for you, please feel free to email the teachers through the FACTS portal and schedule an appointment that works for both of you.

SAT Testing at AA
We are excited to announce that students will have the opportunity to participate in SAT School Day this Thursday afternoon, October 26. The SAT is a standardized test for college admissions in the United States. Allowing students to take the test in a familiar environment will build their confidence and do well. To learn more about the SAT, we invite you to explore the website: https://www.collegeboard.org/. You are also able to access a free practice test: https://satsuite.collegeboard.org/sat/practice-preparation/practice-tests
There is limited seating available for the test; we will allow a total of 50 students who are in the 11th & 12th grades to sign up. Students must bring their $60 to the office, and write their names to reserve a place on the list ASAP. Checks should be payable to Andrews Academy with "SAT" written on the memo line. (Note: Those in bells will be at Ringfest so will be unable to take the test that day.)
October 26 is the second day of Parent/Teacher Conferences, and the students have noon dismissal. Students participating in SAT School Day are excused from their classes that day only if they are present for the test that afternoon and should arrive at school at 1 PM to begin testing promptly at 1:30 PM. If you do come for the whole day, please bring a lunch.
Please bring an approved calculator:

Senior Pictures & Ads for Yearbook
Senior pictures are needed for yearbook, class night, and the class composite to be hung in the AA Commons. Yearbook will need your senior and baby pictures ASAP. We encourage you to get your senior picture done ASAP if you haven't already. PLEASE PLAN AHEAD and get your picture done in a timely manner.
Please send an electronic senior picture (JPEG) to the yearbook sponsor (myersd@andrews.edu). You do not have to go to a professional photographer for this picture, but please make sure you follow the picture requirements below. If not, the yearbook team may request that you send an alternative. For yearbook pictures, seniors should be looking at the camera rather than away from it.
|
Pictures for the yearbook and senior ads must adhere to the following requirements:
|
|
|
- In color
- Picture from waist up (not entire body) - yearbook picture
- Portrait/vertical mode (not landscape/horizontal) - yearbook picture
- Attire per AA guidelines—no sleeveless shirts or bare shoulders, no low cut or cropped tops, no jewelry - both
- High-resolution JPEG (at least 4x6, 300 ppi resolution)
|
|
|
Baby Photos
By the same date (October 20), please submit a baby picture as well. The baby picture will be used by yearbook as well as for senior bulletin board and class night purposes. Please submit a high-resolution JPEG baby picture. If you cannot scan the picture, you may bring the baby picture to the yearbook staff, and they will scan it for you.
Also, please plan ahead for senior yearbook ad nights on Monday and Tuesday, October 30 & 31, at 5:00 PM. At that time, you and your parents can purchase senior ads for the yearbook (see the messages to seniors in the back of previous yearbooks for examples).

Important Attendance Information
- Pre-arranged Absences: Please be sure to fill out a pre-arranged absence card if you know in advance that you will be missing school due to a doctor/dentist/orthodontist appointment, trip, basketball tournament, driver's test, etc. These cards can be found in the main office or online. A parent's signature is required, then the office, and teacher(s) of the class(es) that you will miss.
-
Class Schedule Adjustment (CSA) Requests: A CSA is available for students who have a study hall at the beginning or ending of the school day or will be working during a study hall during the school day. A CSA is required for students who leave the Academy to attend classes at Andrews University, who are going to work off campus, or who wish to begin the school day later or leave earlier on a regular basis. The CSA request form must be filled out and signed by everyone indicated on the form before the student stops attending their study hall. Students must adhere to CSA guidelines that are printed on the CSA application. Any violation may cause the CSA to be revoked. I will email students and parents when a CSA is approved.
- Other Absences: Parents, please call the front office (269-471-3138) or email aaattendance@andrews.edu if your student is going to be absent or tardy. These are the preferable methods.
Please provide the reason why your child will not be attending school and how long you think they will be out.
Parents/Guardians are the only authorized individuals who can excuse a student's attendance. When emailing, parents must send correspondence from their email account to maintain the validity of the request. Please include the name of the student.
From the Sourcebook (pg. 83):
Students who miss three (3) consecutive school days due to illness must provide written documentation from a certified medical professional corroborating the necessity of that absence.
For any attendance questions that you would like to ask by email, please direct these questions to aaattendance@andrews.edu.
Thank you!
