Student-Led Week of Prayer: Theme - “Honoring God Through Service”

One of the highlights of Spring semester is Student Week of Prayer, (April 1-5, 2024).  The class, SA, and NHS pastors, under the guidance of Pastor Mario Ferguson and the religion teachers, have prayed, brainstormed, planned, and worked together to create a series of messages centered around the theme, “Honoring God Through Service.”

To begin the week, SA Pastor, Kofi Amponsah, introduced the theme and began the program with prayer. Karan Chun led in scripture reading of various texts dealing with service. As different students stood and read the text, they filled in the blank that Karan left out. From the readings, it developed into our theme: "Honoring God Through Service." Chrissy Penno, freshman class pastor, presented the devotional on why we should serve others. She read various texts, including the good Samaritan account, developing the main idea that we should serve others because God asks us to.

Chrissy Penno led out in a scripture reading activity and prayer to begin the program on Tuesday. After song service, Lily Murphy, sophomore class pastor, addressed the impact of service. She shared some insights on her recent mission trips of SOW to Dominican Republic and with a church group to El Salvador. She shared pictures and stories of her time in El Salvador over spring break, commenting on the impact the simple VBS crafts and science activities had on the students—they really appreciated all that was done. She was impacted by her service and concluded with the statement, “One of the biggest gifts God has given is the gift of service.”

Band & Orion Strings Tour

Andrews Academy Band & Orion Strings enjoyed their New York City and Washington, DC, tour. They performed at various churches and schools, which is a great way to share Jesus through music. These tours are also an excellent educational experience of learning outside of the classroom, not only about music, but also about history, geography, government, and so many other things as they experienced the sights and people of NYC and DC.

We appreciate the positive spirit of the group as they had to make last-minute adjustments to the schedule as there were some mechanical problems with the bus during this trip. Here are some group photos and concert photos from their tour. Students also enjoyed a volleyball game with the Highland View Academy and Atholton Academy students after a concert.

8:00 AM - 12:00 PM
(noon dismissal - no lunch, snacks provided)

Our AA Community Service Day is scheduled for this Friday, April 5. As part of Andrews Academy's educational program, we participate in service to others.

As a school we feel that it is important for students to learn to serve our community. We devote a day to practicing this concept with the students, as well as having various smaller projects throughout the year.

Please plan to arrive for Week of Prayer devotions at 8:00 AM. Activities for the day include yard work, picking up trash, cleaning windows, etc. Remember to wear closed toe shoes and long pants (no shorts!) for protection as you work. Please bring work gloves. You do not need to wear your AA uniform; however, if you have an AA t-shirt, please represent our school. If you wear a hoodie, it should be appropriate. Our dismissal time will be at 12:00 noon.

An explanation of what steps are needed to complete the reapplication process was also given. Please begin this process as soon as possible to help ensure that you receive the classes you would like to take. Thank you, Ms. Ivonne Segui Medina, AA registrar, for leading in this assembly.

Important Attendance Information

  • Pre-arranged Absences: Please be sure to fill out a pre-arranged absence card if you know in advance that you will be missing school due to a doctor/dentist/orthodontist appointment, trip, basketball tournament, driver's test, etc. These cards can be found in the main office or online. A parent's signature is required, then the office, and teacher(s) of the class(es) that you will miss.
  • Class Schedule Adjustment (CSA) Requests: A CSA is available for students who have a study hall at the beginning or ending of the school day or will be working during a study hall during the school day. A CSA is required for students who leave the Academy to attend classes at Andrews University, who are going to work off campus, or who wish to begin the school day later or leave earlier on a regular basis. The CSA request form must be filled out and signed by everyone indicated on the form before the student stops attending their study hall. Students must adhere to CSA guidelines that are printed on the CSA application. Any violation may cause the CSA to be revoked. I will email students and parents when a CSA is approved.

  • Other Absences: Parents, please call the front office (269-471-3138) or email aaattendance@andrews.edu if your student is going to be absent or tardy. These are the preferable methods.

Please provide the reason why your child will not be attending school and how long you think they will be out.

Parents/Guardians are the only authorized individuals who can excuse a student's attendance. When emailing, parents must send correspondence from their email account to maintain the validity of the request. Please include the name of the student.

From the Sourcebook (pg. 83):

Students who miss three (3) consecutive school days due to illness must provide written documentation from a certified medical professional corroborating the necessity of that absence.

For any attendance questions that you would like to ask by email, please direct these questions to aaattendance@andrews.edu.

Thank you!
