Andrews Academy Principal Search Committee Update
I wanted to take a moment to let everyone know that our work has started in the formal search for an Andrews Academy principal.
The search process is guided by our formal nine-member search committee, which includes representatives from the Andrews Academy board, staff, faculty and students, as well as the Lake Union, Michigan Conference, and Andrews University. The committee has been instructed to follow the procedures and documentation in place to guide them through the formal search process and the selection of finalists for the principal position. In the next few weeks that committee will start to review resumes.
As our search committee does this work, we have also compiled a list of characteristics and qualities that will guide us:
If you have additional ideas about the qualities and characteristics that you would like our committee to consider for our next principal, please send me an email at aaboardchair@andrews.edu using the subject line: Principal Search Committee. Additionally, each member of our search committee is seeking feedback and input from the constituencies they represent.
This job opening has been posted on the Andrews University Human Resources page, as well as on multiple Adventist organization employment websites. If you know of someone who might be a qualified and interested candidate, please encourage them to visit jobs@Andrews to find out more.
Thank you for your prayers and support as we continue this important transitional journey for the leadership and future of Andrews Academy.
Fares Magesa
Chair, Andrews Academy Governing Board

Black History Celebration Assembly
A special celebration assembly concluded Black History Week on Friday, February 23, 2024. The assembly began with numerous special musics, readings, and video presentations. Thank you, Pastor Ferguson and a large group of students, for organizing this very informative and powerful week of programs and this celebration assembly. And thank you to each of the participants, which included alumni and other guests.
Let each of us continue to contemplate and pray about the theme for the week, “Our Story.” May we accept the challenges that Pastor Eric Bell Jr. presented and speak up to correct wrongs and help change the world to be a better and fairer place for all. May we experience that restoration and unity we can find in Jesus.
At the close of the program, special thanks were expressed to Pastor Bell, who was the guest speaker this week. Students then thanked Pastor Ferguson, who recently announced that he will be leaving at the end of the school year as his family moves to begin their ministry at another location. He received a standing ovation as they expressed their thanks for his time and ministry at Andrews Academy.

Chapel Recap
Throughout the month of February, we have been celebrating Black History Month with various history nuggets and songs. This week we focused on Black History for chapel. Former local pastor, Bible Camp speaker, and Week of Prayer speaker, Pastor Eric Bell Jr. was our speaker for this week. The theme for the week was “Our Story.”
The history nugget on Thursday was about Octavius Catto, a civil rights activist and an American tragedy.
Pastor Bell read from Mark 10 of the blind beggar Bartimaeus, who shouted out to Jesus to have mercy on him. Others rebuked him; however, Jesus went over, asked what he wanted, and restored his sight. There is a time to shout out for the right reasons. In 1965, there was a march that would have crossed the bridge to a state capital to shout out for voting rights that turned into bloody Sunday. However that shouting out resulted in the voting rights bill being signed into law five months later. If you see an issue, say something—shout it out. Pastor Bell challenged us by asking, “At what point will you be responsible to make change?” Like the blind beggar did, allow Jesus to let you “see.” He can bring you through the tough situations you may face.
Friday’s chapel presentation by Pastor Eric Bell occurred during the special assembly program. He read from Matthew 5:38-48, portions were, “if one hits you on the cheek turn the other cheek” and “be ye therefore perfect like your Heavenly Father.” Too often these phrases were misapplied to slavery. Our society unfortunately doesn’t stop the slapping of other’s on their cheek, instead someone else does the slapping. Pastor Bell encouraged us that when we turn the other cheek, we look more like Him instead of “them.” Too often people may want revenge, but we should leave that to God. Our concern in the midst of whatever problems we face is to be more Christlike.
Thank you to Pastor Bell for helping each of us to think deeply about the issues you discussed this week. “Our Stories” this week challenged us to speak up to correct wrongs and to be more Christlike.

Looking for Cookie Dough to Purchase?
As you may recall, the freshman class had a cookie dough fundraiser before Christmas. They had to purchase each type of cookie dough in bundles of 6, so there are a few tubs left over:
-
5 chocolate chip
-
3 oatmeal raisin
-
4 snicker doodle
-
1 sugar cookie
Tubs are available for immediate pickup. Please contact Mr. Atkins at satkins@andrews.edu (or stop by his classroom) or reach out to a freshman if you would like some frozen cookie dough to help complete the freshman class fundraiser. ($16/tub)

Important Attendance Information
- Pre-arranged Absences: Please be sure to fill out a pre-arranged absence card if you know in advance that you will be missing school due to a doctor/dentist/orthodontist appointment, trip, basketball tournament, driver's test, etc. These cards can be found in the main office or online. A parent's signature is required, then the office, and teacher(s) of the class(es) that you will miss.
-
Class Schedule Adjustment (CSA) Requests: A CSA is available for students who have a study hall at the beginning or ending of the school day or will be working during a study hall during the school day. A CSA is required for students who leave the Academy to attend classes at Andrews University, who are going to work off campus, or who wish to begin the school day later or leave earlier on a regular basis. The CSA request form must be filled out and signed by everyone indicated on the form before the student stops attending their study hall. Students must adhere to CSA guidelines that are printed on the CSA application. Any violation may cause the CSA to be revoked. I will email students and parents when a CSA is approved.
- Other Absences: Parents, please call the front office (269-471-3138) or email aaattendance@andrews.edu if your student is going to be absent or tardy. These are the preferable methods.
Please provide the reason why your child will not be attending school and how long you think they will be out.
Parents/Guardians are the only authorized individuals who can excuse a student's attendance. When emailing, parents must send correspondence from their email account to maintain the validity of the request. Please include the name of the student.
From the Sourcebook (pg. 83):
Students who miss three (3) consecutive school days due to illness must provide written documentation from a certified medical professional corroborating the necessity of that absence.
For any attendance questions that you would like to ask by email, please direct these questions to aaattendance@andrews.edu.
Thank you!
