Andrews Academy's

Official Newsletter

May 22, 2022

Dear AA Families,

To God be the glory, great things He has done. We only have a few more days before the semester ends. On behalf of the Andrews Academy faculty and staff, I share a sentiment of thanks and appreciation. Thank you for partnering with us this year; your support has been tremendous.

As we move forward into summer, we hope that it will be a fun productive summer for you and your family.  As is our practice, we’ll be working on our building, painting, cleaning, completing needed repairs, planning, hiring new personnel, etc. We solicit your prayers as we seek to create an environment that is inclusive and Christ-centered.

Andrews Academy recently formed a committee to look at developing an intramural program, and to look at how we can best offer recreational activities for our students. We believe having a balanced life is essential to mental, physical, and spiritual growth.

We are also in the formulating stages of expanding our spiritual life initiatives, where we are asking parents to partner with us to elevate the spiritual atmosphere of the school. We need parents who are willing to come and pray over our students and the campus at large.  We are selecting individuals who are willing and able to connect with our students through Bible study and other activities centered around faith and relationship building. This initiative will be implemented for the 2022-23 school year and beyond.

Graduation 2022 is this upcoming weekend. Please review this E-Sanjo for the correct dates and times. Tickets are only required for class night on Thursday, May 26, at 7:00 PM. Only individuals with tickets will be allowed to be in the chapel; all other guests without tickets will be directed to the overflow in the gymnasium. Please comply with this expectation so that we can have a great celebration with our graduates and families. Our students have worked hard and have met the requirements for graduation. Let us congratulate them on their accomplishments. Parents, teachers, administration, and students should work in harmony to provide a great commencement weekend. Let us pray about this celebration and be active in providing a spiritual atmosphere for all.

Students should have started cleaning out their lockers. All items need to be removed. Please encourage your child to check the lost and found to see if there are any items belonging to them before the items are removed from AA and donated. Tomorrow, Monday, May 23, is the last day to check the lost and found before items are donated.

Please encourage your child to make good decisions for the remainder of the school year. Uniform expectations have not been relaxed. No sweatpants, shorts, etc. Please check the Sourcebook if you need clarification regarding the dress code.

Numbers 23:19: “God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent; has He said, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?”

God always keeps His word!

Blessings,

Pastor Mario Ferguson

Community Service Day

As part of Andrews Academy's educational program, we participated in community service on Friday, May 20, 2022. As a school, we think that it's important for students to learn to serve our community. We teach this concept in a very practical way, by devoting an entire day practicing this concept with the students in the fall, as well as having various smaller projects throughout the year. This year, because seniors are on their class trip this week, we incorporated a second day of service. Seniors will also have a day of service during their class trip.

Many projects were accomplished around Berrien County. One group of students picked up 14 bags of garbage at the on and off ramps of US 31 going into Berrien Springs as part of the Adopt-A-Highway program. Another group of students picked up garbage at Fisherman’s Haven, the bridge, and nearby parks. Another group of students helped clean stables and organize things at the Berrien Springs Fairgrounds. Others volunteered at Neighbor to Neighbor community center, and another group went to help two widowed moms with their yard work at their homes. There were numerous other projects that other AA students and faculty worked at in and around Berrien Springs.

Parents, you should be proud of what your children did on Community Service Day as they served the community. Numerous people at these locations commented on how diligently AA students worked as they helped others, and how thankful they were for all that was accomplished. Our little bit of effort went a long way in demonstrating the philosophy of Andrews Academy and the diligence, maturity, and selflessness of its students. As faculty, we are blessed to be able to have a part in it.

It was a fun day, and God blessed with a beautiful and safe day.

Final Exam/Assessment Schedule

& Graduation Practice

Final exams start this Tuesday, May 24. Please note when your exams are scheduled for and carefully prepare for them so that you can do well in each of your classes. The first day begins at 9:00 AM to provide you more time to prepare. If your transportation requires you to arrive at the school at 8:00 AM, then please go to the Commons.

If you have a study hall (or band) during the first exam slot of the day, then you do not need to arrive until devotions (or your first final of the day, whichever comes first). Please see Mrs. Meekma in the office to excuse your class or if you have any questions. Be sure to sign in at the front office if you arrive after the first exam time.

If you have a break in between two finals (for example, on Wednesday you have a 10:15 AM class final and no 11:10 AM class final [such as a study hall or CSA], then you must go to study hall. You may not leave campus and walk over to Apple Valley or anywhere else.

Seniors are not required to be in the building tomorrow, Monday, May 23, unless they need to complete assignments in the building. Those seniors who do not have finals do not need to come for the scheduled finals from Tuesday - Thursday. They do need to attend Devotions/Kaleidoscope at 11:45 AM on Tuesday, class night practice on Tuesday at 1:15 PM, and Mizpah/Checkout on Thursday at 10:50 AM. They are also required to be at practice on Friday morning at 8:45 AM (juniors also).

Please remember that students must stay in the classroom for the entire exam class period. You may not go "get books," "get a drink," etc. when you are done with your exam.

Before the exam begins, please get books you may need to study from, get a drink, use the restroom, etc. so that you can stay in the classroom the entire time. We want the entire school to be quiet during exams so that they can be done as effectively as possible without distractions. Thank you!

Chapels This Week

On Wednesday, Pastor Lindsey Pratt began her talk asking us what our most valuable asset we possess is. Some replied phone, money, brain, and a Bible. Pastor Pratt then told a story of when she was 22. She began her first full time job, and her uncle (a financial advisor) strongly encouraged her to invest $500 each pay period for retirement. She didn’t, but regrets she did not heed his advice because over time, the money would have grown to have a good retirement fund already. She then pointed out that time is our most valuable asset and that students have more time in their lives to invest than adults do. She read Ephesians 5:15-17, which encourages us to make the best use of our time. She encouraged each to draw a circle and fill in what you do in each 24 hour day to see where you are spending your time and maybe to reprioritize your time. She concluded that each of us should prayerfully consider how we are spending our most valuable possession - TIME.

Elisabeth Jeroncic, AA freshman, presented a devotional on Thursday that was based on an English assignment in which she was to create a poem on despair and hope. She told a story from grade six when she studied so much for a science test on the phases of the moon and felt she got an A on the test only to find out she received a F. In despair, she was letting that bad test define her that day, but later she found out that she indeed got an A on the test—there had been a grading error. She then shared the poem she wrote:

Hope or Challenges

Some things are hopeful while others

Are challenges but when you let them define you that's the challenge.

But look at them with hope, open your eyes and you might not be surprised.

I know times can be tough, I know they can be hard but look at them with luck.

God is there, sometimes it might seem empty and dry but open your eyes and don’t be blind.

And when the day comes when I see the bright light I'll remember all the times I fight.

Hope and despair is everywhere just open your eyes and don’t be blind.

Elisabeth said that if she had opened her eyes to realize it must have been a mistake about the test, she wouldn't have been discouraged. She encouraged each to not let your despair define you. Give God your despair and turn to God for your hope!

Junior Class Cookie Dough Fundraiser Continues

Now that the other class fundraisers have concluded the juniors would like to continue to sell the unexpected extra cookie dough we received last December. The remaining cookie dough containers can store over a year in the freezer. They have been kept frozen since December and are available for anyone interested in supporting the Junior class and enjoying fresh cookies. Each container can make 30 cookies. We are selling them at a discounted price of $10. Please stop by Atkins’ classroom to pick some up or contact any junior who would be happy to pick one up for you. We still have many chocolate chip available.

Important: Remember that in order to order lunch, students must have a signed contract with AU Dining Services/Bon Appetit and their ID card.
