No School on Monday

Since this Monday, January 17, is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, there is no school. Enjoy the long weekend!

Dear AA Families,

We have completed the second week of our spring semester. Even with the uptick of COVID-19 cases in our community, we have still been able to maintain in-person teaching and learning. At this time, we have approximately 13 COVID-related cases. This includes individuals who are quarantining and isolating. To date, we have had no record of transmission in our building. We give God thanks for His guiding care and protection. We recognize that each one of us is being directly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we navigate through these ever-changing times. It is our intention to create the best possible teaching and learning environment for both students and staff. Please review the new quarantine guidance from the Berrien County Health Department.

These are highlights of the new guidance for exposure to COVID-19:

Up-to-date on vaccines and boosters:

  • Students and staff without symptoms do not need to quarantine. Monitor for symptoms and wear a well-fitted mask for 10 days.

Not up-to-date on vaccines and boosters:

  • Students and staff must home quarantine from days 1-5 and test on day 5. Then wear a well-fitted mask for days 6-10.

or

  • Students and staff may test to stay for days 1-6, and mask to stay for days 1-10.

Students and staff who test positive may not attend school, and must isolate at home for five full days after symptom onset (or five days after the positive test if they do not have symptoms). They may return to school on day six if they have no symptoms and can wear a well-fitted mask for an additional five days.

Andrews Academy will continue with universal masking and will continue to monitor and seek guidance from the appropriate agencies as we navigate through the semester.

Reminders:

  • Students are not permitted to use cell phones and/or smart watches in class.
  • Students are not permitted to wear jewelry in school or for any school activities. Please review the AA Sourcebook for clarification.

Bible Camp 2022:

Our traditional Bible Camp resumes on January 20-23, 2022. It will be held at Camp Au Sable. The speaker is Pastor Eric Bell Jr. Students are required to take a COVID-19 test two days/48 hours before traveling. We will monitor students’ and chaperones’ health by taking daily temperatures. COVID-19 tests will be administered for anyone who shows potential COVID-19 symptoms.

Accreditation Process:

This is an accreditation year for Andrews Academy. As a part of this process, students and parents will be asked to complete a survey. The link for the survey will be sent this Tuesday, January 18. Please take some time to complete the surveys.

This coming Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We celebrate the life of a man who gave unselfishly of himself to create a better world through peace, love, and equity. Let’s not just view this as another holiday. We should truly celebrate the contributions made by Dr. King by standing against injustice, racism, sexism, and any philosophy that is contrary to God’s ideals.

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” Martin Luther King Jr.

Blessings,

Pastor Mario Ferguson

Physical Science Class

Yesterday, the physical science class did an experiment dealing with magnetism. In the previous chapter, they learned about electricity. In this project, they used a battery, magnet, and coil to make an electric motor. This helps illustrate how electricity and magnetism work together to convert electric energy to mechanical energy. Thank you, Ms. Chao, for providing a hands-on learning experience about magnetism.

Three King's Day

In Latin America and some countries in Europe, Three King’s Day is celebrated on January 6. In Spanish II classes, the students are learning about Mexico’s cultural traditions. On January 5, the children in Mexico leave water and grass for the camels and also their shoes next to the Christmas tree or by the door. They wake up on January 6 to find presents. The students of Spanish II classes wrote to the three kings just like Mexican children do, similar to writing to Santa Claus with their wish list like here in the USA.

Thank you to Mrs. Marah Silvestre, AA Spanish teacher, for creating these interesting activities to practice their Spanish and learn more of the culture.

Chapels This Week

Pastor Lindsey Pratt brought us a short thought for chapel on Wednesday. The theme for this week was How to Be Victorious. To go along with this, Pastor Pratt called up three volunteers. She first asked them how they would define the word "victorious." After this, she asked them how they would define what it means to be victorious as a Christian. To put it simply, being victorious as a Christian is saying "yes" to Jesus and His sacrifice.

On Thursday, Eva Prouty, junior class pastor, presented a short devotion for chapel. Eva and her family have five dogs, but one, in particular, is hers. When Eva first met her dog, Scout, the puppy was very energetic and happy. Scout had some fears and annoying habits at first, but Eva was there with her through it all. Eva reminded us that building a relationship and trust takes time; it is a process. There was nothing Scout could do to make Eva stop loving her. The same goes for God. He loves us all so much that He was willing to give His son's life for our sake. There is nothing we can do to drive God away. He wants us as we are and will always love us.

Jacob Elanko, senior class pastor, presented chapel on Friday. He shared testimonials from different eras of his life. In junior high, he started to doubt God, but then realized, “God’s at His best when we are at our worst.” After moving to a different school, he was baptized and formed new friends. He concluded his talk by sharing three major points:

  1. Remember what He’s done for you, and where you’re coming from.
  2. Always be thankful.
  3. TRUST in GOD.

Free Counseling Offered at Andrews University

The Andrews Community Counseling Center (ACCC) will have openings for many new clients when they reopen in January 2022 (although individuals interested in services are encouraged to call now and leave a confidential voicemail message to get their name toward the top of the waiting list). Graduate-level practicum students who provide these free counseling services at the ACCC have training in counseling adults, adolescents, and children. Counseling sessions are completely confidential.

During the pandemic, the ACCC knows that the need for mental health services is great, and they also recognize that the need for physical safety is essential. Therefore, all counseling in-person sessions will require counselors and clients to wear a face mask covering the nose and mouth at all times, regardless of vaccination status. For those unable to attend in-person, some teletherapy services may also be available using confidential Zoom sessions.
