NHS Cause Week

The week of November 7-10, 2023, is the seventeenth annual NHS Cause Week. During this week, the National Honor Society (NHS) is responsible for the morning devotions to raise awareness of various causes and is often involved in raising funds to help a certain cause somewhere in the world. This time, they're focusing on the theme, “Give Because He Gave.” This year the cause and fundraising is for the SOW Safari mission trip. Students can become involved in purchasing bricks for the mission building project and to pray for this mission trip.

NHS Cause Week is when NHS officers, members, and guest speakers raise awareness about a specific cause with the aim to make a difference in the world, both globally and locally. “Cause Week” was created by some students from the class of 2008 during the 2006-2007 school year. They single-handedly created the first Cause Week at Andrews Academy. At the close of the first Cause Week, one of the individuals shared how his family lived in their car for a while. After a church took them in and helped them get reestablished, they were able to move to Berrien Springs so that he could go to Andrews Academy, and their lives turned around. Because of this, he had a burden to help his peers become aware of ways they could be involved in helping others. It was such a good and important week that the NHS has continued it since then. It is an important AA tradition.

“Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.” (1 Peter 4:10)

Today (Tuesday), Karan Chun shared about the theme of “give because He gave.” She began her talk by sharing how small we are compared to the vastness of the universe. Despite this, the Creator of the universe came to earth to be born in a manger and eventually die for us! She shared three categories in how we can give:

  1. Materialistically, such as giving some money or belongings to those that are in need, or for a worthy project.

  2. Mentally, by speaking words of kindness & developing friendships.

  3. Spiritually, by praying and giving Bible studies.

She shared how someone put a kind note in her locker as a freshmen and how it made a big difference in motivating her the rest of the year. She hung onto it for three years. Little gifts make a big difference.

Class Vespers

Periodically throughout the school year, each class create a vespers activity and worship experience together. These vespers not only provides time to worship together but also to develop class leadership.

On Friday evening, November 3, each of the classes had vespers at various homes around the community. We have pictures from the freshman and junior vespers. Thank you to the families that opened their home for these vespers.

The freshman Thanksgiving feast was held at Melanie Fuste's home. This was a feast of traditional Thanksgiving foods, Thanksgiving praises to our God, and traditional Thanksgiving desserts for our vespers time together. Worship included singing songs of praise and thanks to our God as many members of the class shared their testimonies of thanks and shared a favorite Bible text. There was lots of talking, noise, and laugher as 51 freshmen enjoyed their evening together. One freshman said to me that it felt like a big family reunion! Thank you, freshmen, for sharing your thanks and bringing lots of tasty food.

Junior class vespers was at Leah Reid’s home. Pastor Goncalves had the vespers talk. Juniors enjoyed their time playing games, eating pizza, socializing, and then worshiping together.

Important Attendance Information

  • Pre-arranged Absences: Please be sure to fill out a pre-arranged absence card if you know in advance that you will be missing school due to a doctor/dentist/orthodontist appointment, trip, basketball tournament, driver's test, etc. These cards can be found in the main office or online. A parent's signature is required, then the office, and teacher(s) of the class(es) that you will miss.
  • Class Schedule Adjustment (CSA) Requests: A CSA is available for students who have a study hall at the beginning or ending of the school day or will be working during a study hall during the school day. A CSA is required for students who leave the Academy to attend classes at Andrews University, who are going to work off campus, or who wish to begin the school day later or leave earlier on a regular basis. The CSA request form must be filled out and signed by everyone indicated on the form before the student stops attending their study hall. Students must adhere to CSA guidelines that are printed on the CSA application. Any violation may cause the CSA to be revoked. I will email students and parents when a CSA is approved.

  • Other Absences: Parents, please call the front office (269-471-3138) or email aaattendance@andrews.edu if your student is going to be absent or tardy. These are the preferable methods.

Please provide the reason why your child will not be attending school and how long you think they will be out.

Parents/Guardians are the only authorized individuals who can excuse a student's attendance. When emailing, parents must send correspondence from their email account to maintain the validity of the request. Please include the name of the student.

From the Sourcebook (pg. 83):

Students who miss three (3) consecutive school days due to illness must provide written documentation from a certified medical professional corroborating the necessity of that absence.

For any attendance questions that you would like to ask by email, please direct these questions to aaattendance@andrews.edu.
