Winter Bible Camp 2022
Sixty-six students are currently enjoying Andrews Academy's annual spiritual retreat, "Winter Bible Camp," at Camp Au Sable (Jan. 20-23, 2022). The design for the weekend is to have each student involved in leading out in some aspect of the program so that each would be blessed and grow through the activities, to challenge students to critically think about choices they make, and to develop a deeper relationship with Jesus. The Spiritual Life Committee, consisting of organizational pastors, prepared several interactive Bible activities for the meetings.
On Thursday evening, the girls gathered for a tea party! They talked about how God has bought us for a great price, and how He is the Potter and we are the clay. We don’t need to feel or talk like we are a throw-away Styrofoam cup or insignificant cafeteria mug. We are valuable, precious teacups. The girls chose a teacup to use for the evening and then keep as a reminder. While eating, the girls were given a surprise letter from their family affirming and appreciating them – reminding them why their beautiful heart matters.

Latin American Culture Class
In Latin American Culture Class, the students continue to learn about Mexico. This week, they learned about different Mexican traditions for celebrating birthdays, festivals, Christmas, and national holidays, among others. One of the traditions is to celebrate with a piñata. In groups of two, the students started to create their own piñata to experience the culture hands-on.

Chapel - Guidance Counselor Week
Wednesday’s special music was performed by Grace Dockerty (vocals) and Ben Loenser (piano). Our guest speaker was a graduate student, Yulian Tinoco. Yulian focused on group therapy and pointed out four major takeaways from it. First, in group therapy, you aren’t alone. Second, you have a support system in a group. Third, you have a voice you can use candidly (but respectfully). And fourth, you have a safety net to fall on if you don’t meet your goals.
Jesus and His disciples were the first example we have of group therapy. Jesus didn’t turn any of His followers away after they made a mistake; instead, He helped them learn from it. Yulian shared this quote with us: “Check yourself before you wreck yourself.” Sometimes you may think you’re doing okay, but it’s always good to slow down and check. Like when you go to the doctor for your annual checkup, for example. You may think everything is okay, but your doctor could find something that needs fixing. To close, Yulian encouraged us to consider the idea of group therapy and try it out, at least once.

Two of our Andrews Academy students excel at playing hockey as an extracurricular activity. One of these athletes is senior Benjamin Proctor. Ben #50 is the starting goalie for the LSJ Varsity Warriors hockey team. Ben is one of the team-chosen captains of his team, and this past weekend, he led his team to one of the most amazing victories in high school hockey. Ben’s team played a game against Riley High School that ended in a tie, which then went into overtime, in which neither team was able to score. This led to a shootout match. Ben claimed victory for his team after 7 rounds against 7 shootout players.

The other featured athlete is freshman Brenden Meyer. Brenden #75 is the starting goalie for the LSJ Junior Varsity Warriors hockey team. Brenden and his partner goalie led their team to a 5-0 undefeated victory in the Pittsburgh MidWinter Classics Tournament this past weekend in Pennsylvania.
Brenden is also ranked the number 2 goalie for JV goalies in the entire state of Indiana (which is the league this team is part of). Brenden is favored to take Ben’s place next year on the Varsity team.

Free Counseling Offered at Andrews University
The Andrews Community Counseling Center (ACCC) is now open for new clients. Graduate-level practicum students who provide these free counseling services at the ACCC have training in counseling adults, adolescents, and children. Counseling sessions are completely confidential.
During the pandemic, the ACCC knows that the need for mental health services is great, and they also recognize that the need for physical safety is essential. Therefore, all counseling in-person sessions will require counselors and clients to wear a face mask covering the nose and mouth at all times, regardless of vaccination status. For those unable to attend in-person, some teletherapy services may also be available using confidential Zoom sessions.
