Andrews Academy's SOW Safari Mission Trip - Part 2

by Rich Aguilera

The SOW Safari mission trip team is entering its second week in McAllen, Texas, on the southern border of the United States with Mexico. After the first couple of days of work, we took Friday off as our "fun day" and boarded a bus 90 minutes east to South Padre Island on the Gulf Coast.  A large part of the group enjoyed the splashing around in the mild temperature waters and heavy waves, while others played in the sand, took walks, or tried to throw a football around during a windy day. After a picnic lunch, we headed back because that Friday evening a group of students was asked to lead out in the evening youth meeting, REVIVE, for the worship and praise set.

The following morning, which was Sabbath, the group attended Sabbath School and then displayed their talents by presenting the entire morning worship service to our host church. Once again, the musical team led out with a wonderful worship and praise time. Other students prayed, read a Bible text, presented an invitation to return tithes and offerings, and several other typical worship elements. During the children's story over a dozen of the students worked together to present a lively skit about the story of Noah.  For the "main message," three students delivered powerful personal testimonials, and Principal Ferguson had a summary. Many members and the pastoral staff came up to us,  amazed at how these students were so talented and willing to serve in the community and participate actively in the worship service.

Sabbath afternoon, the team also presented the AY (Adventist Youth) program with elements including a third praise and worship set, an icebreaker, and Nick Feliciano and Alex Aguilera did a Kendama demonstration and talked about how they try to use their Kendama talents to tell people about God. On Saturday evening, the group went to the gym for several hours of recreation. Rich Aguilera also presented a worship thought.

Sunday and Monday were typical workdays, except for Monday morning when the group decided to take the morning to make a small excursion to the historic border town of Hidalgo, and one of the busiest international border crossings in the United States. The students were able to get a close look at the border fence, and they also visited Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, a popular destination for bird watching and hiking/biking trails. In the afternoon, the group resumed their work at the trailer park doing a variety of jobs including hauling trash, pruning, and cleaning. Then they finished with their VBS program for the neighborhood kids.

There are two days of work left before we return on January 6, and we pray that God will be able to continue working with and empowering these youth to continue serving God passionately with their talents and energy!

Rich Aguilera is a parent volunteer for this trip.

Good to be Back "at School"

Although we would all like to have a longer holiday, it was nice to see everyone “back at school” yesterday. Our first week of this semester is online as a precautionary COVID-19 measure with so many traveling this past Christmas break and with case counts high in our county. In-classroom instruction should begin on Tuesday, January 11, if all goes as planned.

Mr. Atkins was impressed with how almost everyone of his 104 students got into the new Google Classroom, used the new Zoom links, and joined each class on time. The students have gotten rather tech savvy, so much so that each class began on time and students participated in “classroom” discussions and activities like “normal,” even though there were so many new things to sort out on our first day back.

Thank you all for being such awesome students!

Chapel This Week

Pastor Glassford was our speaker for the first chapel of the new year on Monday. The topic was about how people like to finish something well. He told us a story about a foot race he participated in during high school. Pastor Glassford thought he had won, but he had cut a corner without realizing it, so he was disqualified. Pastor Glassford pointed out that sometimes we assume we are better at something than we honestly are. Or there are things that aren't of importance, like beauty or athleticism. Pastor Glassford reminded us that we don't have to turn away from difficult situations and take the path of less resistance. Instead, he encouraged us to do hard things with God's help and guidance.

Today (Tuesday), our guest speaker was Pastor Jose Bourget. With the recent passing of the holidays, he wanted to show us a new way of thinking about life. For Pastor Bourget, and maybe many of you, New Year's Day doesn't feel much different than New Year's Eve. Many people make resolutions for the coming year, whether that's a "new me," personal goals, etc. Pastor Bourget has a tradition of watching The Sound of Music every Christmas. His favorite song from the movie is "Favorite Things." He pointed out that Christmas has become a time when people think of themselves. However, in James 1:17, we are told that every gift comes from God. To close, Pastor Bourget called us to live for others instead of ourselves in 2022.

Free Counseling Offered at Andrews University

The Andrews Community Counseling Center (ACCC) will have openings for many new clients when they reopen in January 2022 (although individuals interested in services are encouraged to call now and leave a confidential voicemail message to get their name toward the top of the waiting list). Graduate-level practicum students who provide these free counseling services at the ACCC have training in counseling adults, adolescents, and children. Counseling sessions are completely confidential.

During the pandemic, the ACCC knows that the need for mental health services is great, and they also recognize that the need for physical safety is essential. Therefore, all counseling in-person sessions will require counselors and clients to wear a face mask covering the nose and mouth at all times, regardless of vaccination status. For those unable to attend in-person, some teletherapy services may also be available using confidential Zoom sessions.
