Official Newsletter

January 28, 2022

Dear AA Families,

I pray all is well with your family. In a world filled with sadness and gloom, we still have the assurance of the gospel; Jesus will soon return. Each week brings its challenges and rewards. Last week was a week filled with challenges. We called an asynchronous learning day due to circumstances beyond our control. At our traditional Winter Bible Camp, we needed to have sufficient coverage for the 66 students who attended. We also needed to maintain appropriate coverage in our classrooms. Last week also had challenges of illness and family emergencies that affected the availability of faculty and staff. The reward, however, was a spirit-filled Bible Camp experience. Many students recommitted their lives to Christ. Five students requested baptism, and several requested Bible studies. We give God thanks for all those who participated in Bible Camp. Special thanks to Pastor Thorly James for stepping in at the last minute. It was indeed a divine appointment.

Parent Meeting:

As we move forward in the semester, I have scheduled a parent meeting for March 1, 2022, at 6:30 PM (via Zoom), and I am personally extending an invitation to all parents and students.

Since serving in the capacity of principal, I have scheduled meetings every semester to hear your concerns and address relevant issues and introduce new polices. During this meeting, I will also share information about the future of Andrews Academy. I consider it an honor to serve in ministry at this academy.

COVID-19:

So far this week, we had 11 new positive cases with no evidence of any transmission in our building. Many of the students tested positive at home.

Please review the new protocol regarding quarantine and isolation. We recognize that COVID-19 will not be eradicated quickly. For this reason, we need to continue finding ways to safely provide meaningful experiences for our students. We can accomplish this through partnership. We are our brothers' and sisters' keeper, so let us consider how our individual responses to COVID-19 affects our community. If you traveled or participated in activities, or you have been in situations that could have potentially exposed you to anyone who may be COVID-19 positive, please monitor yourself and family members and get tested.  Please isolate or quarantine if there is any evidence of COVID-19. We are all responsible for keeping our school and community safe.

Please continue to use #Campusclear and report any CVOID-19 cases to aaprincipal@andrews.edu and covid19@andrews.edu.

Community Service:

“It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant.” Matthew 20:26

Jesus set the example for us by serving others to honor His father. We also serve others to honor God. A part of my principal initiative is to create various service opportunity for students.

I am currently seeking new service opportunities for our students to participate in. Please let me know of ones that may be available.

Christianity is very practical, serving others is one of the most practical ways to demonstrate the love of Christ. We can do much for those who do not have much.

"Then He will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’" Matthew 25:45

Blessings,

Pastor Mario Ferguson

At sundown, we will gather by the outdoor campfire for a devotional and prayer to begin the Sabbath. Throughout the evening, students can enjoy s'mores by the campfire. Dress warmly and bring sleds!

MAP Testing

Freshmen and sophomores did their MAP® Growth™ test from NWEA® on a computer or tablet this past Wednesday. MAP Growth scores help teachers check student performance by measuring achievement and growth three times in a school year. Teachers use results to tailor classroom lessons and set goals for students. This test adapts to the student’s responses to measure the student’s skill level. These results will provide a more complete picture of what the student knows and is ready to learn—whether it is on, above, or below their grade level. Teachers can identify students with similar scores that are generally ready for instruction in similar skills and topics, and then plan instruction accordingly.

Chapel This Week

Thursday for chapel, we didn't have a speaker. Instead, the praise team sang a song, and then we meditated on prayer. SA pastor Ben Santos shared a story about a time in his life when God answered a prayer differently than he wanted. Ben's grandfather had dementia for as long as Ben can remember. Once, before he died, Ben's grandfather was admitted to the hospital because things were looking grim. Ben went to a prayer meeting, and while he was there, he realized his prayer for his grandfather to live was selfish. Ben changed his prayer and asked God for His will to be done. Unfortunately, Ben's grandfather passed away. Although this isn't what Ben originally wanted, he reminded us that God is always listening to our prayers. God knows what is best for us. To close, Ben encouraged us to put all our cares in God's hands.

Because of MAP testing, we did not have a chapel program on Wednesday. On Friday, we individual class devotions, and no pictures were taken.

Free Counseling Offered at Andrews University

The Andrews Community Counseling Center (ACCC) is now open for new clients. Graduate-level practicum students who provide these free counseling services at the ACCC have training in counseling adults, adolescents, and children. Counseling sessions are completely confidential.

During the pandemic, the ACCC knows that the need for mental health services is great, and they also recognize that the need for physical safety is essential. Therefore, all counseling in-person sessions will require counselors and clients to wear a face mask covering the nose and mouth at all times, regardless of vaccination status. For those unable to attend in-person, some teletherapy services may also be available using confidential Zoom sessions.
