Gaining a Deeper Understanding of Salvation through Kintsugi Art
Last semester, Pastor Alvin Glassford's Bible classes learned the art of Kintsugi, or Kintsukuroi. Some poetically translate Kinstsugi to “golden joinery.” This art of fixing broken pottery is a centuries-old Japanese art. Traditional ceramic repair is usually done by rejoining ceramic pieces with a camouflaged adhesive, while the Kintsugi technique employs a special lacquer dusted with powdered platinum, silver, or gold. Once completed, the conspicuous cracks of the ceramic pieces glint a golden color emphasizing the beautiful seams, each “repaired” piece gives a one-of-a-kind appearance.
Kintsugi art often makes the repaired piece even more beautiful than the original, revitalizing it with a new look and giving it a second life. This unique art celebrates each artifact's unique history by emphasizing its fractures and breaks instead of hiding or disguising them.
Likewise, Jesus artfully crafts the broken pieces of our lives, resulting in a deeper beauty made possible by His divine grace on display in our many redemptions. Pastor Glassford acquired a porcelain or fired clay item for each of his Friday morning Bible class students.
Jesus is the Rock of Salvation, and when we fall on Him, self will be broken. (Many stay away from Christ for this reason alone.) With this in mind, students placed their Kintsugi projects in Zip Lock bags and dropped them on a hard slab of concrete, threw them against a brick wall, or smacked them on the school sidewalk.
Piece by tiny piece, they glued their object lessons back together. In the end, a touch of golden powder highlighted a fusion of brokenness and grace. Pastor Glassford hopes that each piece will serve as an encouraging reminder to place our broken pieces in the hands of our loving Redeemer and Friend.

Partnering for Eternity at AA
Hello, Beloved Fellow Alum of Andrews Academy!
This is Joelle (Perry) Ashley here—class of 1988. I coordinate a scholarship program that pairs students with older adults in the community to provide house and yard work, as well as companionship. In return, students receive integral insights and a forever friendship from their mentors, as well as an $800 scholarship each semester to support their Adventist education. The program is called Partnering for Eternity 9-12, or PFE for short.
The students visit once a week and accomplish whatever their mentor needs. They wash cars, deliver groceries or meals, weed whack, split and stack wood, harvest garden veggies, wash windows, rake leaves—you name it, they do it. They also play board/card games together, read books, and share hobbies, stories and life lessons together, as well.
This program is funded by individual donors like you and a matching grant from the SFFC Foundation. A $240.00 donation from you, combined with grant matching, becomes one semester’s $800.00 scholarship for a student. $480.00 becomes $1,600.00, enabling one student to participate in the PFE program for a school year.

Alumni weekend is scheduled for October 15-16, 2021. Honor years will end in 1 and 6.
As of right now, we do not know if this event can be in person or if it will need to be virtual again due to COVID-19 restrictions. Andrews Academy follows the requirements and guidelines of the State of Michigan as well as Andrews University, and it will depend on the pandemic situation as to whether or not we will be able to host a large gathering with little distancing by then.
We are cautiously optimistic that we will be able to meet in person and will let you know as soon as possible once a decision as been made so that you know how to plan.
