NHS Cause Week
The week of November 7-10, 2023, was the seventeenth annual NHS Cause Week. During this week, the National Honor Society (NHS) was responsible for the morning devotions to raise awareness of various causes and is often involved in raising funds to help a certain cause somewhere in the world. This time, they focused on the theme, “Give Because He Gave.” This year the cause and fundraising was for the upcoming SOW Safari mission trip. Students can become involved in purchasing bricks for the mission building project and to pray for this mission trip.
On Wednesday, Professor Twyla Smith shared on how to give to the poor. She had many practical things that we may not think of when giving, things that help those in need. We’ve included a number of pictures of her slides on Facebook that list many of the practical things that can be done for your reference. She shared Proverbs 3:27, which is her, and should be ours also, principle behind giving. You will recall that there are three ways to give:
-
Materialistically
-
Mentally
-
Spiritually
Wednesday's focus was on the first one.
Mr. Darchell Clark shared from John 5 during chapel on Thursday. He retold the story of the paralyzed man sitting by the pool waiting for the ripples to appear to try to get in the pool first, that according to the understanding of the day, he would be healed. Jesus asked the person if he wanted to be healed, and as he stood up he was healed. Mr. Clark encouraged each of us to “take up our mats and follow Jesus” as He calls us today. He challenged each of us to contemplate what we can with do with Jesus’ blessing in this moment of time we are in today.
Today (Friday), Mrs. Sari Butler, former AA faculty member and past SOW Safari mission trip coordinator, began by having a student volunteer illustrate how we sometimes lose the blessings of the pennies when we greedily hang on to the dollar. She encouraged us to open our hand, and more importantly our hearts, because God is wanting to pour His blessings into us. She shared a few stories from SOW mission trips. One story was about how the participants noticed one night that the mom of a family would attend the meetings, and the next night the daughter attended. This went on throughout the entire time there, and the mom accepted Jesus and was baptized on Friday night, and likewise the daughter was baptized on Sabbath morning. Mrs. Butler was curious and asked why they were not there for each other’s baptism. She was told that they only had one dress that they shared between them, and they wanted to honor God the best they could by wearing a dress. Mrs. Butler asked the female SOW participants if anyone was willing to leave one of their dresses behind for these two people. The participants gave 20 dresses! The following day the mother and daughter were both at the service. They said they had given the remaining 19 dresses to others in their village who had none. Let’s share the blessings we have with others.

AA Thanksgiving Traditions
God has truly blessed this school year. As we are soon to enjoy the Thanksgiving holidays, let's thank Jesus for the many blessings the Andrews Academy family have received. Please continue to pray for the school, that His Spirit will lead throughout the remainder of the school year.
Andrews Academy has a number of Thanksgiving traditions. On Tuesday, we had our Thanksgiving Notes assembly. This assembly involved writing letters of thanks to students, faculty, and staff who have impacted our lives. As students wrote their notes, Christmas music was played in the background. The Student Association and volunteers will deliver these letters to the mailboxes in students' lockers so that everyone is greeted with letters of thanks just before Thanksgiving Break.

AA Music Groups in the Community
Andrews Academy students presented Jesus through music this past Sabbath (November 4) at PMC. A group mostly of AA students and alumni led in song service. Handbells performed at PMC. Thank you, Dr. Elsy M. Gallardo-Diaz, Mr. Marcello Martins, and all of the Andrews Academy students who are taking music classes for their many hours of practice and the performances you do. These songs do indeed draw us closer to God during our worship experiences.

Important Attendance Information
- Pre-arranged Absences: Please be sure to fill out a pre-arranged absence card if you know in advance that you will be missing school due to a doctor/dentist/orthodontist appointment, trip, basketball tournament, driver's test, etc. These cards can be found in the main office or online. A parent's signature is required, then the office, and teacher(s) of the class(es) that you will miss.
-
Class Schedule Adjustment (CSA) Requests: A CSA is available for students who have a study hall at the beginning or ending of the school day or will be working during a study hall during the school day. A CSA is required for students who leave the Academy to attend classes at Andrews University, who are going to work off campus, or who wish to begin the school day later or leave earlier on a regular basis. The CSA request form must be filled out and signed by everyone indicated on the form before the student stops attending their study hall. Students must adhere to CSA guidelines that are printed on the CSA application. Any violation may cause the CSA to be revoked. I will email students and parents when a CSA is approved.
- Other Absences: Parents, please call the front office (269-471-3138) or email aaattendance@andrews.edu if your student is going to be absent or tardy. These are the preferable methods.
Please provide the reason why your child will not be attending school and how long you think they will be out.
Parents/Guardians are the only authorized individuals who can excuse a student's attendance. When emailing, parents must send correspondence from their email account to maintain the validity of the request. Please include the name of the student.
From the Sourcebook (pg. 83):
Students who miss three (3) consecutive school days due to illness must provide written documentation from a certified medical professional corroborating the necessity of that absence.
For any attendance questions that you would like to ask by email, please direct these questions to aaattendance@andrews.edu.
Thank you!
