Academy Day

Today, March 8, 2022, 71 guests spent the day with us at Andrews Academy. The day is designed to help eighth-grade students become familiar with some of the activities of the school. We hope each eighth grader had a wonderful day with us!

Academy Day began with worship, as each school day does. Principal Mario Ferguson welcomed the eighth graders to Andrews Academy. Then there were a number of special musics from some of the music organizations. Song service was led by Academy students. Mrs. Tonya Snyder, parent of a sophomore and member of the AA class of 1996, led out in the worship talk. She shared experiences from her time at Andrews Academy, provided insights for incoming freshmen, and focused our attention on developing a relationship with Jesus while at AA. The program concluded with an introduction of each faculty and staff member, followed by prayer.

All students then went to visit classes. Each teacher had a lesson designed to give a taste of what their class is like. For example, Mr. Atkins had eighth-grade students learn the parts of the human digestive system and then some of our current students quizzed the eighth-grade guests. After fifteen minutes, the eighth graders switched to another classroom. In many cases, current students led out in classroom activities. The morning ended with a group photo of the AA class of 2026!

Following this, half of the eighth graders had lunch while the other half met in the chapel for a presentation about what classes to take at Andrews Academy. The school registrar helped students start to fill out a potential schedule for the next school year and learn of the steps involved in registering for school. The two groups then switched activities. The final event was a fun assembly program which included games, advice from SA leaders, and awards. Principal Ferguson had closing remarks, and Mrs. Mills closed with prayer.

More than half of the eighth graders were able to stay for an optional badminton ping pong activities, and pizza supper. We hope that each eighth grader had a great day and will choose to attend AA next year.

Chapels this Week

Monday's chapel began with special music by Nik Feliciano, Nate Miller, and Claire Yang. Sophomore Nathan Elanko was our speaker. The beginning of this year was a bit tough for Nathan. He tried out for the basketball team and ran for class office, but both of these fell through. After these let downs, Nathan felt rejected and his relationship with God took a hit. Nathan equated these experiences to David and Goliath. David realized that God was in control and trusted Him. It can be easy to ask why God allows "giants" to arise in our lives. However, we must remember that these obstacles are due to our enemy, the devil. To close, Nathan reminded us that God is always on our side, no matter what giants we may be facing.

Mrs. Tonya (Hippler) Snyder, parent of AA sophomore Max and member of the AA class of 1996, led out in the worship talk as part of the Academy Day experience. She shared experiences from her time at Andrews Academy, provided insights for incoming freshmen, and focused our attention on developing a relationship with Jesus while at AA. Thank you, Mrs. Snyder, for this insightful and awesome presentation.

Free Counseling Offered at Andrews University

The Andrews Community Counseling Center (ACCC) still has openings for new clients. Graduate-level practicum students who provide these free counseling services at the ACCC have training in counseling adults, adolescents, and children. Counseling sessions are completely confidential.

During the pandemic, the ACCC knows that the need for mental health services is great, and they also recognize that the need for physical safety is essential. Therefore, all counseling in-person sessions will require counselors and clients to wear a face mask covering the nose and mouth at all times, regardless of vaccination status. For those unable to attend in-person, some teletherapy services may also be available using confidential Zoom sessions.
