Servant Leadership - Thank You, Pastor Ferguson!

We are used to having Pastor Ferguson greet us as we walk into school each day, or seeing him as he leads out in chapel, or hearing him on the intercom for prayer at the beginning/ending of the day. We see him in his office and throughout the school, making sure that everything is running smoothly.

We thank him for this and also want to thank him for his servant leadership behind the scenes, of which many of you may not be aware. For example, last night there was a long meeting after school that he attended. Following that, he had to repair a toilet that was leaking as our custodian is out of town for a little while. After 7:00 PM, a couple of faculty ran into him as he was finishing the toilet repair. Even at that late hour, he stopped and had a listening ear as the two faculty discussed a situation and collectively developed a proposed solution.

Thank you, Pastor Ferguson, for your servant leadership, not only in the things that we see, but in the many behind-the-scenes things that you take care of. May God richly bless you as you serve Andrews Academy!

If you have a study hall (or band) during the first exam slot of the day, then you do not need to arrive until devotions. Please see Ms. Esther in the office to excuse your class or if you have any questions. Be sure to sign in at the front office.

If you have a break in between two finals (for example, on Thursday you have a 10:15 AM class final and no 11:10 AM class final [such as a study hall or CSA], then a 2:25 PM class final), then you must go to study hall. You may not leave campus and walk over to Apple Valley or any other place.

Chapels this Week

Monday’s guest speaker was Pastor White, who joined us over Zoom. In light of the recent school shooting near Detroit, Pastor White reminded us that such things are not God's plan. But He will come soon. Pastor White's message was about friendship. To support his point, he told the brief story of Amnon. For some reason, Amnon desired his half-sister Tamar. He didn't know what to do and sought counsel from his cousin. Craftily, his cousin instructed Amnon to pretend to be ill and ask his father to allow his half-sister to care for him. This plan worked, and Amnon ended up raping his half-sister. He also ended up getting murdered a year later.

To close, Pastor White left us with four questions to keep in mind as we consider the company we keep:

  1. Can you trust those whom you call your friends?
  2. Do they have your best interests in mind?
  3. Will they tell you the truth?
  4. Will they lead you to Jesus?

As a continuation of yesterday, Pastor White joined us again for worship today (Tuesday). To begin, Pastor White briefly recapped his message from yesterday in the simple statement: Not everyone who says they are your friend is really a friend!

"What would Jesus do?" is quite common when confronted with a moral dilemma. Pastor White agrees with the basic principle of this question. However, he thinks it is partially incomplete. See, when you ask someone else this question, you get their perspective of what they assume Jesus would do. Pastor White encouraged us to go out and personally find out what Jesus would do when faced with a difficult situation. Going along with this focus, Pastor White also encouraged us to direct his four points from yesterday toward ourselves as well:

  1. Can I be trusted?
  2. Do I have people's best interests in mind?
  3. Do I tell the truth?
  4. Will I lead others to Christ?

To close, Pastor White reminded us that our friends might not always seem like our friends. However, we can always be an example of friendship to others in our lives and give what we have to offer regardless.

Free Counseling Offered at Andrews University

The Andrews Community Counseling Center (ACCC) will have openings for many new clients when they reopen in January 2022 (although individuals interested in services are encouraged to call now and leave a confidential voicemail message to get their name toward the top of the waiting list). Graduate-level practicum students who provide these free counseling services at the ACCC have training in counseling adults, adolescents, and children. Counseling sessions are completely confidential.

During the pandemic, the ACCC knows that the need for mental health services is great, and they also recognize that the need for physical safety is essential. Therefore, all counseling in-person sessions will require counselors and clients to wear a face mask covering the nose and mouth at all times, regardless of vaccination status. For those unable to attend in-person, some teletherapy services may also be available using confidential Zoom sessions.

Important: Remember that in order to order lunch, students must have a signed contract with AU Dining Services/Bon Appetit and their ID card. Also, lunches need to be ordered online or through the GET Mobile app at least one day in advance (by 5 PM). See instructions in a previous E-Sanjo or contact Dining Services for more information - 269-471-3161 or ds@andrews.edu. If a student orders lunch but then is absent that day, please email Dining Services by 9:00 AM to cancel the order.
