Andrews Academy's

Official Newsletter

May 29, 2020

Dear AA Family,

We will never be able to convey our gratitude for your support as we worked through these last seven weeks of remote learning and the uncertainties of COVID-19. Without your patience and prayers, distance learning and maintaining meaningful connections with our students would not have been possible.

Though we are still in the pandemic crisis mode, as Christians, we have enough evidence of God’s grace and mercy towards His children. Surely, He is a present help in times of trouble. Let us continue to encourage and lift each other up.

We want to congratulate the seniors and their parents, and pray that we will soon be able to gather to officially hand you your diploma. Who knows – maybe you will be the first class that actually receives a diploma at graduation instead of just a diploma cover?! There is one more packet that seniors will need to pick up; this packet will include your diploma and a few other memorabilia items that you may want to save.

I want to reassure you that as Andrews University gears up to have face-to-face learning in the fall, so is Andrews Academy. We will work through the summer to figure out how to do that as safely as we possibly can. As you might imagine, this is a daunting task, since there are many views, and guidelines continue to change daily as doctors and scientists learn more about the infection. Currently we are processing how many students can fit in classrooms; if we need to add more sections of lunch; and should chapel and assembly programs be live-streamed into classrooms instead of trying to access the chapel.

While this may not have been the end of year we had imagined, we want to thank all of you again for your continued support and for journeying with us through this school year. At the end of every year, we have an AA tradition of reciting the Mizpah.

The Mizpah has been used many times throughout history to symbolize that what is important in life is goodness, kindness, and the courage to be understanding. Mizpah has also become a part of Andrews Academy's end-of-the-year events. Since 1992 when Dr. James Nash first introduced this symbolic ceremony, a list of names of all the students in the school for that year has been placed in the Mizpah vault located in the theme wall of the Academy Commons. It is the school's way of presenting to God the entire Academy student body and faculty from not only this year, but for every year since 1979, when the building was opened. By placing the names in the vault, we are placing each person in God's hands with a prayer that each person will reunite together when Jesus returns to take us to Heaven.

Although we aren’t together, we have kept the tradition and legacy going by placing all the student names in our vault.

Although we did not walk out of this building together, we know the student body, faculty, and staff that comprised the 2019-2020 will never be together again. Life is short. Life is not certain. With the threat of this COVID-19, this is even more evident. Make a covenant to yourselves and your friends and family that no matter what happens, you will strive to live the principles of the Mizpah - goodness, kindness, and understanding. As you read the words of the Mizpah below, let it be a covenant for all in front of God to be joined together again with Jesus when He comes.

“The Lord watch between me and thee,
when we are absent
one from another.”

Dear Senior Parents & Students,

Who would have thought two weeks ago, when we shifted our thinking and committed to a virtual graduation program, that it would turn out as well as it did this past weekend? While this program was not what we had wanted originally, I thank God that the final outcome brought glory and honor to HIM as well as honored you, our graduates and your family. This could not have been accomplished without you. Your participation and your words that you carefully chose made each part of graduation meaningful. From the legacy parents to our parent tributes, to all the students who filmed their bits and parts, words cannot express how well it all came together. If you could have seen me in my living room: my emotions ranged from pride to laughter to tears to elation and everything in between. We received many compliments over the weekend; we even received a request for more information about our school!

Every graduation is unique, but this one takes the cake! And I’m not just saying that because I’m a parent.

Thank you again. And may God bless each of you as we move forward to our next chapter.

Virtual Grad Bash

Tuesday, June 2, 7:00 PM via Zoom

Because of our shelter in place, we are inviting 8th graders and their parents to our virtual Grad Bash. We won’t be able to celebrate as we wanted, but we do want to provide an orientation and provide information on how to enroll and pick classes for those who are planning to join our AA family.

This virtual Grad Bash will be this Tuesday, June 2, at 7:00 PM (Zoom link below). During this meeting, you will hear from Ms. Ivonne, our registrar, and Mrs. Sanford, our guidance counselor, and maybe a few other faces will pop in! We are still working out all the details of how best to do this in this new virtual land, but we will do our best to provide you with helpful information.

We understand that COVID-19 has changed many of our circumstances, and you may be unsure if you or your child will be able to enroll at Andrews Academy in the Fall. I invite you to join us anyway on June 2 to hear the information and to ask your questions. Again, we don’t know what tomorrow will bring, but we do know WHO holds tomorrow, and so we continue to put our plans in God’s more than capable hands.

Please feel free to email the front office at penn@andrews.edu with any questions you might have. [The password for the Zoom link below is GRADBASH20.]

Senior Pictures & Ads for Yearbook

PLEASE DO YOUR SENIOR PICTURE THIS SUMMER - DUE OCTOBER 23.

Senior pictures are needed for yearbook, Sanjo Senior edition, class night, and the class composite to be hung in the AA commons. The yearbook needs your senior and baby pictures by October 23, 2020. The senior section of the yearbook is being worked on near that time.

We encourage you to get your senior picture done during the summer before the busy school year begins. Photographers get busy in the late Summer and Fall, so you may want to book an appointment early. PLEASE PLAN AHEAD and get your picture done in a timely manner.

Please send an electronic senior picture (JPEG) to the yearbook team (aayearbook@andrews.edu). You do not have to go to a professional photographer for this picture, but please make sure you follow the picture requirements.

Pictures must be:

  • In color
  • Head and shoulder picture (not entire body)
  • Portrait/vertical mode (not landscape/horizontal)
  • Modest attire
  • No sleeveless, no jewelry
  • High resolution JPEG (at least 4x6, 300 ppi resolution)

By the same date (October 23), please submit a baby picture as well. The baby picture will be used by yearbook and for class night purposes. Please submit a high resolution JPEG baby picture. If you cannot scan the picture, you can bring the baby picture to the yearbook staff, and they will scan it for you.

Also, please plan ahead for senior yearbook ad night in early Fall, during Senior Spirit Week. At that time, you and your parents can purchase senior ads for the yearbook.

If you have any questions, please email silvestre@andrews.edu.

Baptismal Classes

Baptismal Classes will start tomorrow, Sabbath, May 30, at 5 PM with Pastor Ferguson.

Virtual Baptismal Class

Students,

We need your voices and talent! Plans are underway for our AA musical production Fall semester of 2020-21, but we can't do it without you.

Specifically, we need a male quartet. We'd like to begin auditioning that quartet NOW. If you are a male interested in joining the AA Musical, and if you can commit to an after-school rehearsal schedule, contact Mr. VanDenburgh ASAP so we can work on setting up online auditions for the quartet.

But that's not all! Although we're trying to put together a quartet now, no part is more important than the other. This production can't happen without the rest of the cast: leads, supporting roles, chorus/ensemble.

We need YOU! Come be a part of an experience you'll remember for the rest of your life. If you like to work with a team, sing your little heart out, and put on a great show, be sure to include "Literary Interpretation" on your course schedule for next year. AA presented a fantastic show last year, and we're ready to do it again. Are you?

~ VanDenburghs

Honoring the Senior Class of 2020

Besides honoring the seniors on Instagram with our Senior of the Day (x 2), we also honored our seniors on Facebook. Please see the Honoring the Senior Class of 2020 FB album for more pictures of our seniors.

Online Photo Gallery for Seniors

Since the coronavirus has ruined a lot of plans for 2020 high school graduates, the Herald Palladium newspaper has found a special way to honor the graduating class at www.TheHP.com. They have created an online photo gallery, sponsored by United Federal Credit Union, where parents and families can upload a photo of their graduating senior and include a congratulatory note at no charge!

You can either go to www.TheHP.com and click on the Class of 2020 banner ad, or click the link below to upload your photos. They are accepting photos through June 12. Readers can also browse the galleries to see the photos of the graduates and well wishes.

Drive-Thru Ends School Year at AA

Curbside check-out concluded a rather unusual year. It was fun for the faculty and staff to see each of you as you drove by to return textbooks and other items and receive your yearbook!

Although it was fun to see each other, it was not the same as the usual last day of school where, as a school family, we recite the Mizpah, pray, clean out lockers, and say our goodbyes. There are often many hugs and tears, especially by seniors, as we depart. Social media has been the substitute this year, and a senior sharing with a faculty member after commenting on some specifics concluded by saying, “I started to cry today because I am going to miss the teachers and staff so much.”

Stay safe and healthy, and let’s pray for each other during these summer months.

2020-2021 Re-Enrollment

Students and Parents,

While the world is being turned upside down with COVID-19, we are doing our best to try to find normalcy in routine. With that in mind, we would like to open re-enrollment as a possible diversion to everything else going on right now.

In the past, we have stressed a first-come, first-served mindset, urging students that the sooner they turn in their re-enrollment packet, the faster they can pick a locker, solidify classes, and get financial aid. This will not be the case this year. We are sending you the packets and asking you to ignore the verbiage in it that stresses the urgency of turning in these packets, as we made these packets over the last few months.

We are, however, providing you the packets and doing our best to move forward electronically rather than in person as we are accustomed to doing.

Please follow the steps below to complete re-enrollment.

1. Financial Agreement

Please connect with Gracie Gaytan, Business Manager, to complete the documents at gaytan@andrews.edu.

2. FACTS Re-Enrollment

Please follow these simple instructions:

a. Go to https://factsmgt.com.

b. Select Parent Log In.

c. Select FACTS Family Portal.

d. Enter AN-MI into the District Code field.

e. Enter your username and password. If you have forgotten your username or password, please click on the link provided.

f. After logging in, click on the Apply/Enroll button in the left menu.

g. Click on the Enrollment/Re-enrollment button. Our Enrollment system will open with a link to the enrollment packet for your child. The online process should take approximately 15 minutes to complete. Your information will be saved if you need to quit and come back later.

(Please note: You will need to use a computer to access the online enrollment packet. Mobile devices can be used to log in to FACTS; however, the enrollment function will not work.)

If you have any questions regarding the online re-enrollment, please email penn@andrews.edu or leiterma@andrews.edu.

3. Medical Insurance Card

Please upload a medical insurance (front & back – jpeg format only) when completing online enrollment OR email two jpeg photos to penn@andrews.edu.

4. Class Schedule

Please note that certain classes still need the teacher’s approval and require a teacher’s signature. We are asking students to email the teacher their request to join the class, and the teacher will email their approval to Ms. Ivonne, the registrar. Once you have circled your desired classes, please email a picture of your schedule to Ms. Ivonne at seguiwei@andrews.edu.

Nature Nugget - Unwavering Trust

By Mr. Steven Atkins

While cutting the grass on the sledding hill in the back of our property, I saw out of the corner of my eye this fawn stand up and then right away lay down again. I had been looking ahead as I drove to make sure I wouldn’t hit anything when this fawn, 6 feet to the left of my lawn tractor, “practiced social distancing” and started to move away. It then remembered its mother’s instruction to stay in place, that she will be back shortly. Despite this loud lawn tractor being so close, the fawn had unwavering trust in her mother and sat down and continued to hide in the grass. After driving away, I walked back to get this picture, standing only six feet away. As I then walked into the forest, I heard and then saw the mother return to care for her fawn.

I encourage each of you to have unwavering trust in our Heavenly father. As we navigate the paths this COVID-19 crisis puts in front of us, let’s trust God completely. If given certain situations, we may “jump up” in fear, but let us settle back down like the fawn did and rest assured as our Heavenly Father cares for us! Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths."

Instead of posting pictures of classroom events during COVID-19 online classes, Mr. Atkins posted students' "Nature Nugget" that they created on current topics that they were studying. Students were to take their own photo, provide some insight on what they were studying, and develop a spiritual lesson from these observations.

For more nature nuggets, please go to Facebook.
